Valentine's Day is a holiday that is loved by some and hated by others, yet all generally enjoy the sweet treats that come with this holiday. There are many cool and neat ways to decorate baked goods for Valentine's Day. One easy and very impressive way to decorate baked goods is with handmade candy flowers. Before beginning to build the flowers, the baked good to be decorated should be frosted so that the flowers will stick to the cookie or cake.

1) Candy

Purchase any candy that is malleable but when smashed will maintain its shape. Gumdrops and other gummy type candies will work well for this project. Two candies per flower are needed to complete this project.

2) Rolling the Candy

Place granulated sugar on a piece of wax paper, then place a candy on the sugar, place another piece of waxed paper over the candy and roll over it with a rolling pin until it is less than 1/4 inch thick. Repeat this process for each of the candies. If they are really sticky when rolled out more granulated sugar can be placed on the candy.

3) Cutting Petals

Cut the candy into pieces with a half circle on top and triangular bottom, the size needed will depend on the desired size of the final roses. This will become easier after making a couple flowers.

4) Completing the Flower

Take a piece of the candy roll it around its self to create the center of the flower, then continue to wrap pieces around the center to create the flower, until the desired size is achieved. Finally, adjust the petals to create the desired look.

5) Finish with Leaves

Simply cut leaves shaped pieces out of rolled flat green candies and place around the flowers to give the project a finished look.
