Painting- A new coat of paint on all the walls, or even one or two, can change a room dramatically. Paint isn't overly expensive, and is a quick "pick-me-up" for any room. You don't have to paint an entire room for a new look, you can paint one or two walls, or even just paint trim, and change the entire room in less than a day's time. There are also various painting techniques that are absolutely beautiful, and you can really get creative with them. "Sponge painting" is a beautiful option, and great if you are using more than two colors to spruce up the room, the results are a soft "multi-color" look, and it even looks rather like wallpaper. "Rag painting" is very similar to sponge painting, and also has a "multi-color" look, but the effect is bolder and looks more textured. WALLPAPER BORDERS- Wallpaper borders can be found in most dollar stores inexpensively (often as cheap as $1.00 a roll!), and there are many different themes and designs out there! You can use wallpaper borders around doorways, as a "chair-rail" border, with or without painting the walls, and they are a quick inexpensive "fix" to decorating a room. You can tie any theme from a wallpaper border in to any decorating scheme fairly inexpensively. Wallpaper borders are especially great for children's rooms and nurseries.
Bedding- A quick, simple way to change the look of your bedroom, is to simply change your bedding. You can get new colors or designs, to either change your bedroom's look completely, or to just update an existing look. Often, "Bed In A Bag" sets can be found at discount retailers cheaply, and in a varying array of designs and colors. A "Bed In A Bag" set is quick, easy and economical. It will include your comforter, bed-skirt, sheets and pillow cases, along with pillow shams. What a quick and easy fix to change your bedroom's look!
Curtains/Window Coverings- A new set of mini-blinds or curtains can also go a long way towards changing your bedroom decor. If you have dark, heavy drapes, switching to a lighter color, lighter fabric, can dramatically change your bedroom's look, and vice versa. If you have mini-blinds already, you can add a set of lace or sheer curtains in just about any color over your blinds to change the look of your room. Curtains can be made out of fabric which matches your bedspread or which coordinates with it. You can use just about any type of fabric for window coverings, and you don't have to spend an arm and a leg on curtains.
Furniture- If you can't afford to replace all of your bedroom furnishings, then replacing one piece can dramatically change the look of your bedroom. You can find unique, reasonably priced, even dirt cheap, furniture items at yard sales and thrift shops. One unique piece of furniture can change the look of your bedroom, and become the focal point or start a new theme for your bedroom. Adding a piece of furniture that isn't ordinarily a bedroom piece, is also a good way to change the look of your bedroom. For example, a baker's rack with a comfortable stool at it and a mirror on a shelf can be used as a unique vanity or desk. Don't discount the idea of a little sanding and painting to make those older pieces of furniture look like new again!
Floors- Adding new throw rugs or an area rug (depending on the size of your room!), can also go a long way towards updating the look and comfort of your bedroom, regardless of whether you have carpet or hardwood floors!
Knicknacks And Pictures- You can add strategically placed knicknacks, pictures, etc, to completely redo your bedroom's look. These items can be found in dollar stores and thrift shops. I know one lady who found a bunch of small mirrors in different types of frames and sizes who put these on one bedroom wall above her dresser, and it completely changed the way her bedroom looked! Vases with silk flowers or other arrangements also can add warmth and coziness to a bedroom. Use your imagination! I collect tins, and put them on the top of my mirror on my big triple dresser, and it makes my room look a bit old-fashioned and yet adds a coziness to it.
Decorating a bedroom on a budget isn't hard, it isn't impossible, and can be a lot of fun. All it takes is a little bit of imagination and a willingness to see things from a different perspective!
