First and foremost, banish the thought of painting every wall in the bedroom red. This is a basic rule of design - the more dramatic a color, the more limited its use in the form of paint must be. A fully red room would create a manic, chaotic feel; certainly not the feeling desired for a bedroom. Perhaps a single accent wall could be painted red, but as modern design in moving more and more away from boldly painted walls (especially accent walls), let's consider some different uses of the color red for a bedroom decor. Plan on painting the walls a nice warm neutral color and using splashes of red throughout the room in various textures. This methodology of decorating promises a much more natural appeal for a tranquil bedroom environment.
Selecting your base shade of red is important. Don't simply go to the paint store and select a swatch at random. Consider why you are attracted to the color red as the inspiration for your bedroom. If you are attracted to a more rosy shade of red, procure a picture of an actual rose that you can hold onto as your inspiration throughout the decorating process. If you're pulled toward more earthy shades of red, look for an item such and a brick or a stone that poses the precise shade of red you're seeking. These are your inspiration items. Make sure they are portable, as they will prove invaluable as you are shopping for your room. Red is a hard color to match and clashing shades are common. But you can use your inspiration object to prevent this. Hold up any item to your object or photo - if it looks good with that shade of red, it's good for your room!
The most romantic way to incorporate red into a bedroom decor is to select crimson bed linens in luxurious fabrics. Watch for styles that suit your tastes and furniture. Create a mountain of pillows in complimentary accent colors or a matching shade of red to the comforter. A red bed creates a giant splash of color in the room. And against neutrally painted walls as mentioned before, it is a dramatic and sensual touch to a bedroom.
Once the bed linens are selected, splash red about the room by placing flower arrangements, art, or table linens strategically. A good rules of thumb is to not have two dramatically red pieces of decor closer than one foot to one another. For example, if you are hanging several pieces of primarily red art, leaving approximately one foot of space between each item. This will prevent the red accents from becoming overpowering.
Don't be afraid of red! When used smartly and with restraint, the color red can create a great base of decor in any room - especially the bedroom!
