Paint
This can be the simplest and cheapest way to create a new look and feel for any space. By painting an accent wall, you can draw attention to your favorite area, and by painting the whole room you can make a bold statement. One of the best things about paint is that it is also easy to fix. When choosing a color for the room, first determine what kind of feel you are going for. Reds tend to be bold and passionate, browns tend to be cozy and blend with almost any color, greens tend to be earthy, yellows should brighten up a space, and oranges say "wow". Go to your paint store and choose a couple chips that catch your eye, bring them home and see which goes the best with the existing pieces in the room.
Rearranging the furniture
While this might be a labor-some task, this is the absolute cheapest way to revamp any space. By simply moving larger pieces, the space can become more open to the rest of the house or create a secluded area. A good idea is to first sketch out the layout of the room as well as ideas for where you may want the furniture. This really helps for people who have trouble picturing the outcome in their minds, and also cuts down on the work you will have to put in.
A fun thing to try is Feng Shui. By simply googling "Feng Shui", many different layouts and rules will pop up. I tried this in my bedroom when I could not think of anything to do to the space, and I love it! Now, I didn't follow all the rules directly, but I let them guide me to developing and narrowing down ideas.
Swapping
Swapping pictures, vases, candles and other knick knacks can also create a new feel for a room. One thing that I like to recommend is to keep a container for things that you like around the house, but aren't sure where to put. This helps you to avoid clutter as well as have options. I really like going through my container especially after I have taken down my holiday decorations. This also works for people who like to decorate their homes according to season. By purchasing just a few seasonal items, it will help your home feel festive as well as offer you a change of decor from time to time.
Use what you like
The best bit of advice for home decor is to simply use what you like, use what fits your taste, your budget, and your lifestyle. There are no rules when it comes to decor. No matter what all the HG TV shows say, a persons home should be where they are most comfortable. Those shows have good ideas, as well as tips for if you are interested in selling your home, but there is now way that I could live comfortably by all the rules. I buy what I like. I put it where I think it looks best. And I use colors that appeal to me. I understand that not everyone will like my decorating taste, but as long as I keep my home clean, all they can complain about is the decor.
