Decorating a Child's Room

Decorating a changing a child's room is always fun. It can be a lot of work but it's more fun than it is a chore. I would first start by picking a theme that your child likes. You can choose superman, care bears, strawberry shortcake or spiderman. Ask your child what he or she would like their theme to be. You can also pick solid colors like light blues and dark blues or pinks and purples. You can also buy trim to seperate the room which will make it give a two-tone appearance. You will need to purchase plastic to lay on the floor and painters tape to tape off everything you don't want paint on.

You can change or stain the trim or mouldings. You can also swap out light switch covers and light fixtures. I would suggest going to home depot and looking around at different types of things you can change or modify.

I would suggest using a roller and a few paint brushes when you are painting. Make sure not to get the paint on the carpet. Cover the entire room with plastic if you are painting the ceiling. It might also be easier to take off register vents to avoid having to tape around them.

You can buy different dressers or you can paint the dressers you have. You can also strip down the dressers and stain them. I would also suggest buying different pictures that match everything in the room.

If your child is old enough to be in school I would suggest buying them a desk where they can study and do homework. I would buy a lamp or two to place in the room. You can also buy new blinds or curtains if you need them.

Home depot and menards are great places to buy new items for your child's room. I would suggest avoiding wall paper because it's a lot of work to take off once your child gets sick of that look. Don't buy extremely bright colored paint because you might get sick of it quickly. I would suggest sticking with basic colors and shades. You will need to buy all the accessories before you start the project because you don't want the room to be vacant for months on end. It will be a lot of fun and it can be a lot of work depending on how far you want to take the project.
