Decorating Your Dinning Room Table for the Holidays

T.R. Humphrey
Its that time of year when you entertain your family and friends. The dinning room is a place where you gather together to eat and visit. Changing a few items in your dinning room can make a huge difference when making a good impression.

Pick a holiday color scheme. For example, I will use Christmas for my inspiration. You can start by pulling colors off of Christmas ornaments or even Christmas paper. Try white plates on silver or gold place mats with burgundy napkins. One inexpensive thing to try is snowflake wrapping paper used as a runner down the middle of the table. Adding berry sprigs, tensile, and candles can also dress up the table. Other holiday color schemes are white on white, white and ice blue, burgundy and gold, woodsy brown and green. Use natural looking elements when decorating. Be creative when picking your colors and place unique items on the table.

Using Christmas items for centerpieces are an excellent way to decorate your table. Christmas balls in a decorative bowl are a creative way to add interest. You may even want to try strands of jewelery, twine balls, or birch branches. Use a wreath for a centerpiece and fill the center with candles, fruit, or interesting jars of holiday candy. Maybe just fill your centerpiece with flowers. Poinsettias are great plants to use for Christmas. You can find some great Christmas items online at Crate&Barrel. Some other really good online sites to find Christmas ideas are Cambria Cove, Collections ETC, and Gumps.

Little touches through the room like Christmas floral arrangements and holiday lights can help set the mood. You can find a variety of lights for your event online at Ooga Lights. Changing the look of your dinning room chairs is an easy way to make a big difference. Just add white slipcovers and then tie some wide decorative ribbon around the back of the chairs. You can also use ribbons for napkin holders and any other creative ideas you can come up with. Making handmade place cards will add a personal touch as well. You can even use mini Christmas stockings with guests names or little wrapped packages with candy inside. Changing a tablecloth or adding one can help decorate your space. There are many solid and patterned tablecloths that you can choose from to fit your color scheme. You can find many tablecloth options at Williams-Sonoma.

No matter what holiday event you are planning for you can use these ideas in a similar way. Remember to pick your color scheme. Make sure you draw your inspiration from something you like or find interesting. Add personal touches to help guests feel welcome. Setting your table can be fun and interesting when you choose the right items.
