The first thing to think about when decorating a dorm room is how to divide the space, although small, there should still be a division between work space, play space and living space.
Lighting is often poor in the dorm room, and therefore good lighting should be incorporated wherever possible. When choosing lighting, choose bright, colorful lights that can light up the space towards the ceiling in the work areas, or lighting that will cast a glow in the other areas. Use strings of lights above the window, or above the bed to give a modern feel to the room. These can be purchased from the local target store for about ten dollars for a string of lights.
Consider purchasing a large shelving system for an entire wall of the dorm room. I could not have survived my first year without the huge shelf from Ikea that was able use baskets which fit into the space. These held everything from socks to pens, and were a perfect quick fix when trying to clean up the space. These large shelving units can be purchased for as little as $200.00 and will contribute to a large portion of storage within the room. It is surprising how quickly we accumulate things.
Consider a colored decor for the entire room. Use matching bathroom accessories, as well as bedding to coordinate the room. In such a small space, it is a good idea to go with a theme throughout to tie everything together. Consider using contrasts of the same color or choosing two contrasting colors for the space.
The bed is often the focal point of the room in a dorm room, but there are ways to change this. Consider draping curtain wire around the bed, from the ceiling to make the bed a more personal space. Use drapes or curtain panels to create a luxurious feel, and separate the bed from the rest of the room. Use pillows, accents and these panels to make the bed a personal area, as it should be calming and natural.
The dorm room may seem impersonal when moving in, but it will take nothing but a few moments of design, and space planning to make it feel like home. Make the space your own using color, texture and design and inspire other rooms on the floor.
