Decorating with Florals: New Ways to Use Floral Patterns

Kim Brown
Floral patterns are a classic decorating element. They can be found everywhere from the sofa upholstery to the dishes in the cupboard. Nowadays you may be reluctant to decorate with florals for fear of creating a room that Great Grandmother might have concocted. Don't take floral patterns off your decorating list yet. Recently, decorating with florals has taken a new, refreshing role in room design. Fussy, dainty small floral patterns have moved over so large patterns and bold colors can take the spotlight. You can make a floral scheme work even in a modern and streamlined decorating style. Modern clean lines work very well with the bold and delicious floral color schemes now available. Here are several novel decorating tips on combining floral patterns in a room.

Decorating with Florals using Wallpaper
Choose a large striking floral pattern with colors you love and paper one wall in a room. Because you will be doing only one wall the pattern will not overwhelm even in a smaller room. Take a swatch of the paper to the paint store and match the background color to paint the remaining three walls.

Decorating Floors with Florals
Here is a decorating tip for those that live in an apartment and are unable to change the walls, consider a floral patterned area rug. An attention getting floral pattern or color placed in front of a neutral color couch will give your space a new energy. Choose the best quality you can afford and be sure to purchase a pad, it will keep the rug in place and it will wear better. Accessorize with a couple of smaller floral prints but choose colors from the rug to add unity to your scheme.

Floral patterns in Furniture
Using floral patterns on furniture upholstery can add energy and fun to a room. However, choose furniture that has simple clean lines. Fussy ruffles and skirts or big overstuffed pieces will look old fashioned covered in flowers. Choose a stripe or plaid pattern in matching colors for throws or pillows.

Floral Patterns in Art Work
Use a large framed picture with a floral design as a focal point. Choose an unusual arrangement or select a vibrant painting or picture of a single flower. You should plan to cover 2/3 of the width of the wall with artwork. An area too small will look out of proportion. If you don't have one large piece use a grouping of smaller related pieces. Before hanging, arrange them on the floor until you have a grouping you like. Be sure to hang art work at eye level so you can enjoy it without strain. 60" from the floor is a good rule of thumb.

Don't be afraid to use these decorating tips and experiment with floral accents or accessories. If you mix and match patterns, just be sure to use color to make a unified scheme. A room typically will have one main color and should be about 60% of the room. Choose two accent colors and use them for 20% each to finish the room. Use the ideas in this article as a starting point to design your own unique and beautiful room.
