Decorating with a French Country Style Theme

Scott Kessman

The origin of French country style furniture began in Provence and this type of furniture was considered to be practical rather than a decorative form. This explains why the furniture is produced in natural types of wood and usually designed in very subtle ways. Natural colors such as natural pine, honey-brown, light green and white are used to provide the right look for French country style furniture.

Various types of this furniture are found to adequately decorate and co-ordinate a kitchen, bedroom or living area providing an extremely natural and comfortable aura for any of these rooms.

The most vital part of a French country style kitchen is the table. This originates from when farm workers and families would dine together and the tables would be able to seat up to twelve people. Although the tables are mostly of a basic design being made of sturdy pine wood; the chairs generally have caned seats and decorative cushions can be added to complete the overall look. In addition, to give a more modern look to the French country kitchen it is usual to have a wooden cabinet or sideboard to provide storage space for china, silverware or linen.

Bedroom furniture normally comprises of a four poster bed and an armoire which is used as a closet. This closet can either be used for storing linen and towels in or even a small television or compact computer station.

Upholstery of sofas, chairs and benches is normally very colourful and often is a design of either flowers, the sun or sea. Colors such as goldenrod, deep rust, purplish blue and lilac are usually favored for this upholstery.

Although the modern range of furniture may lack the historical attributes, the French country style furniture is crafted accordingly to enhance the style and durability. In fact, some craftsmen use solid hardwood to ensure the overall elegance is retained.

When shopping for French country style furniture whether it is for a kitchen, living area or bedroom always take care to find the most appropriate piece to ensure the right ambiance and co-ordination is achieved.
