Decorating Your Home with Wall Calendars

Agnes Farside
Calendars have been around for thousands of years with some cultures such as the Mayans, Greeks and Muslims having their own versions and ways of interpreting the cycle of time. The word Calendar is derived from the Latin word kalendae, which was the Latin name for the first day of each month on the Roman calendar. In ancient times, wall or floor calendars were highly admired and valued, being possessed by only the very rich. Many people would not consider using a calendar as a wall decoration in their home; however, one that is tastefully made and strategically placed can add a functional elegance to any room.

Perpetual Wall Calendars

There is a large variety of decorative wall calendars available from many different companies. I have seen wooden calendars with clocks and some with a mirror or a photo frame attached. One of my favorite types of calendars is a perpetual calendar. A perpetual calendar is a calendar that can be used year after year. There are many different designs for perpetual calendars. On unique design of a perpetual calendar, which was designed by Gideon Dagdan for the Museum of Modern Art, has a magnetic ball that marks the day on a bar, which appears suspended in space. A second ball seems to float as the magnetic tension pulls the string toward the month printed on the outer ring. This futuristic-looking calendar is sure to add a touch of elegance to any room, not to mention being a great conversation piece.

Cultural Wall Calendars

Another type of calendar that can be considered a conversation piece and add a unique decor to a room is a calendar used by another culture, whether new or ancient. If you are into ancient history try placing an Aztec solar calendar made out of wood, stone or resin on a wall near a picture of Aztec ruins. Try a Greek calendar next to a shelf with a small stature of a Greek god.

Other Types of Wall Calendars

If your budget prohibits you from purchasing a high-end calendar, a regular paper calendar can look nice if placed next to a complimenting picture, shelf, statue or other item. An inexpensive bamboo scroll calendar looks perfect hung next to a shelf containing a small bonsai tree. Try a scroll calendar made from lace for a little girl's room.

If you are a person who loves doing crafts, visit a craft store or browse the Internet for kits containing felt material and shiny sequences to make your own wall calendar.
