If you have an open concept living area don't block off the area with the back of a piece of furniture like a couch. Use an area rug to help define spaces. Using the back of a couch actually confines the room and makes it look and feel smaller. To further separate rooms in an open floor plan, paint a nice calm color on the walls and paint each room one shade different then the other but from the same color pallet. When decorating a small area try not to use dark colored wood or furniture as the dark color makes the room feel smaller and cluttered. Bright light colors open up the room and give it an open airy feel.
While trying to decorate a bungalow with kids, in a small space, can be a hassle you just have to be a tad more creative. There are a lot of little things you can do to hide their messes. First instead of a traditional coffee table try a storage ottoman such as this one from Wal-Mart. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8033837 They allow you to have the connivance off a coffee table, the storage you need and if needed extra seating when you have guests. Another great idea is a coffee table that stores 4 ottomans under it that pull out for more seating and each one has room for storage such as this one http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12344591
To make your ceilings seem higher and the space bigger paint them a light color. Another trick to make a room feel bigger might be one you would not consider is wallpaper and not just any wallpaper but ones with vertical stripes. They pull the eye up to make the room seem bigger. Again don't pick dark colors pick earthy, neutral colors.
Another great way to get some much need storage in a small bungalow is over the door shelf racks. Such as this one http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10975465 They don't take up any room but give you room to store stuff in closets, the bathroom or even the bedroom. As for organization and storage in the bathroom try an over the toilet cabinet such as this one http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10756515 they come in many colors and styles and can match any décor it turns wasted space into storage.
