Decorating Ideas for Cinco de Mayo

Jessica Ann
There are a lot of great ideas for decorating your home or office for Cinco de Mayo. You can purchase all sorts of decorations and even make some of your own if you're the creative type. Some simple ideas for things to make would be to first hit your local craft store or wherever you can find colored tissue paper and pipe cleaners. There are so many things you can do with tissue paper.

One idea is to take roughly 8" x 8" squares of tissue paper, at least 6-8 layers or more, in the same colors or multiple colors. You're going to fold the layers all-together like a fan in about 1/2"-1" layers. When you're done you will fold the entire strip in an even half and tie it in the middle with a pipe cleaner leaving a long section of pipe cleaner as the stem. Pull each sheet of tissue out until you've separated them all forming a flower. You can make several of these to decorate tables or anything else you wish. You can also take toilet paper holders or cut paper towel tubes in half, wrap the tubes in colored tissue twisting the tissue paper closed on one end and secure with pipe cleaner or rubberband. Fill the open end with some dry beans and twist and tie close that end. Now you have some instant colorful maracas to shake. You can also cut the colored tissue paper into long strips and tape them everywhere for streamers. The one rule of thumb would be lots of color.

You can also purchase decorations for Cinco de Mayo if you don't really have the time to make decorations. One site that offers great products is partysupplieshut.com where you can get everything you could possibly need. Here you can get all your plates, cups and napkins, plus all sorts of serving bowls. They are all decorated with a Mexican theme such as sombreros, chili peppers and lots of color. Other great things they offer are balloons, yard art, candles and lights. If you're having an indoor party you can get door and window coverings with fiesta scenes in mind. They also carry some very inexpensive pinatas and stuff to fill them with, not to mention salsa music available on cd.

Party City also offers lots of great ideas for decorating to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Check out their "fiesta" party supplies and see what kinds of things you can get. One thing I like that they have to offer is Fiesta Stripe plates, cups and napkins because if you have some left over they would still be usable at another time. However, they also have these items available with the word "Fiesta" on them and sombreros if you want them to be more specific. I would certainly spend the $15 and get the inflatable sombrero and fill it with Corona for a real festive feel. You will also find banners, garland and quite a few choices for table decorations.

If you have a party supply store in your town then you definitely want to visit it because they will have a lot of options for decorations out now for the Cinco de Mayo celebration. If you'd still rather buy on-line, one final place I would recommend party411.com. One idea I love that they offer is inflatable cactus that are relatively cheap and make great choices for indoor or outdoor decorations. With a cost under $7 for a three foot tall cactus, this is certainly a great way to go and you can afford to get quite a few of these. The other item I found here that I think is great is an inflatable cactus/cooler game. The cooler base holds approximately 8 six packs and the whole things stands about 5' tall. It comes with four toss rings and you can make a cool drinking game with this for an all adult party or offer other prizes if there are kids around. You may want to get a supply of "fiesta" jewelry or glasses here that you can use as prizes or bags of treats.
