Think about what you like and make that the theme for your room. For example most guys like sports and if you like sports then make that your theme for your guys dorm room. Hang up your sports equipment on the walls of your dorm room. That way they can serve and a wall decoration and you can have easy access to them when you need them. Outdoor toys like Frisbees can be hung on the wall so that when you get the urge for a Frisbee toss you can grab the Frisbee off the wall and play. No need to look for your Frisbee in your closet clutter.
Simple decorating is best and if you can get dual purpose out of something then that is what you should have in your dorm room. For instance if you have a lamp that is also a phone it will take up less space and it will be more valuable in a small room like a dorm room. Your bed can be a great spot to use as a sofa to sit on with a few pillows along the wall as a back. Pillows can be used to make yourself comfortable on your bed as you study or guests can use it to sit on when they are visiting.
You can buy a bed riser or loft that will raise your bed up into the room so that you can have room under the bed for things like a dresser or a small sitting area. You can get a riser or loft at a store like Fleet Farm or Menards to raise your bed up.
Along with dual purpose items you may want to consider having as little as you need in your guys dorm room. Clutter can spoil any room. If you have too many things in your room it can spoil the atmosphere and make living in your dorm room uncomfortable yet you want to make your room feel like it is yours with some of your things. Be choosy when you decide what you want in your dorm room. You don't really need that empty beer keg from the last party. It is nice but it takes up a lot of space that you may need for something else.
Decorating a dorm room is a reflection of yourself but if you have a room mate always consider them in your decorating. For some good ideas about decorating a dorm room for guys you can look at http://www.pbteen.com/gift.
