Decorating Ideas for a Small Bathroom

Jason Elliot
Small bathroom spaces always bring huge challenges. There is always the difficulty of decorating so as to make everything (fixtures, toiletries, accessories, etc.) fit, without making them appear cramped and disorganized. So how can one deal with limited space? Here are a few small bathroom decorating ideas to create that feeling of a larger and more organized bathroom:

1) Regarding storage, if there is not enough wall space for cabinets, you can install shelves over the toilet that can used to store towels and other toiletries. Additional shelves can also placed over the bathtub but be careful not to make them too wide as this may cause accidental head injury when getting up from the tub. That area under the sink can also be installed with extra cabinets and shelves.

2) Use neutral colors on your walls. White, beige, lavender, and other pastel colors create an illusion of larger space.

3) Since your walls are in the neutral shade, match your fixtures and flooring to the current color scheme. This creates a monotone effect and makes your bathroom appear bigger. If changing the flooring is not possible, a rug in the same hue as the walls and fixtures can do the trick.

4) Mirrors are always an easy solution to making small space appear bigger. Try attaching a larger mirror above the sink to reflect light.

4) Opt for folding or sliding doors to save space.

5) Lighting, when used properly, can make that small bathrooms appear less dull and more spacious. Sconces attached to the walls and counter top lamps placed by the sink can add brightness to that small space. Natural light is another, if not better, alternative. If possible, have windows or skylights installed.

6) Always keep the bathroom clean and organized. When your small bathroom is free from clutter, it appears less cramped and makes it easier getting around. Wicker baskets, wire racks, or small bins can be placed inside shelves to hold soap, shampoo, tissue paper, magazines, etc. This prevents the sight of small products being disorganized.

7) Choose smaller fixtures, such as wall-mounted or pedestal sinks. Trade in that huge bathtub that you rarely use for a shower stall. To save even more space, use a shower curtain or a sliding glass door for the shower stall.

So even if you don't have that bedroom-sized bathroom you'd like, remember that there are still ways to achieve that kind of effect. Just keep in mind these small bathroom decorating ideas the next time you head out to the home depot or other hardware store.
