Decorating Ideas and Uses for a Vintage Piano Stool

How to Find a Use for a Piano Stool Once the Piano is Gone

C. Jeanne Heida
Old time piano stools are fun bits of furniture that don't have much use once they've been separated from the piano. While they probably could be sold on eBay to a person in need of a piano stool, getting rid of them might not be an option if the stool once belonged to great great Aunt Eustace or some other distant relative.

If you are stuck with a couple of old piano stools like I am, here's some of the interesting ways to use and decorate with these fun antiques.

As an end table. In a cramped living room, piano stools can make great end tables for both sofas and side chairs. While they aren't large enough to hold a table lamp or even a stack of magazines, they do make great surfaces for guests to set down drinks or coffee cups.

In the foyer as compact seating. Does your family pull on boots and shoes in the foyer? An old piano stool in the corner can provide compact seating to make the job of pulling off and putting on boots much easier.

As a plant stand. Mom-in-law uses her old piano stools as plant stands since they are just the right size for holding her collection of large ferns and spider plants. To protect the wood surfaces from water damage, she slips antique glass pie plates beneath the plant bowls.

As compact table space in a guest bedroom. For small bedroom, adjustable piano stools can be put into use as a compact table. I spin my piano stool to the highest setting possible, and pair it with an armless antique side chair to create a table-for-one in the guest room. If a plain stool is too boring for your taste, it can be topped with a 16" round piece of glass and covered with a table skirt.

Used as seating in a kitchen office. Kitchens with build in desks usually borrow a chair from the dinette set for seating. A piano stool in this location keeps your dinette set intact and can be tucked under the counter and out of the way when not in use.

To display an antique doll or plush animal. Do you have antique dolls or vintage plush bear you'd like to display but don't have the right type of furniture? A piano stool tucked in the corner of a room is the right size and height for displaying an antique doll or vintage plush.
