Decorating a Little Boys Room

Choosing a Nautical Theme

Little boys and boats, it's a natural combination. Creating a nautical theme in your little boy's room will make them feel like they are at sea every time they go into their room. Before you begin to decorate you need to decide what type of nautical theme you are going for. Does he love sailboats? Maybe it is speedboats? Maybe he loves sailing ships or ocean liners? There are different ways that you can go about creating a nautical theme.

The first thing you need to consider is what the color scheme is going to be. The first thing that comes to mind is a bright blue and red with white trim. While this is the most obvious choice it really doesn't need to be your choice. You can add other colors or go with a more aquatic blue-green wall color. Even more interesting is to just do the walls a very light blue and then do one wall with a wallpaper mural of sailing ships, pirate ships or a whole fleet. A mural of a marina would be a great choice, lots of small boats with the docks, ropes and jet-skis. If you are talented you can hand paint the mural but everyone else can just go down to the local paint store and ask to see their wallpaper selection. If you would rather just do a border, ships and jet skis are available among other things.

If your little sailor really loves tugboats or sailboats you can purchase a theme bed. These are good for younger children aged 2-6. They make the perfect complement to the nautical theme.

If you have a ceiling light you may want to put in one that has the shape of a boat steering wheel. There are also light switches and lamps that can help carry through the theme. Bedding is you don't have a boat bed could feature sheets, comforter and pillow cases in nautical blue, a quilt with sailboats.

When it comes to accessories one that any boat loving little boy will love is a tug boat toy box. What could be a better place to hold all those nautical toys? A bookcase is the perfect place to display model ships or ships in a bottle as well as all those favorite books. Why not consider hanging a nautical mobile off the ceiling. Sailing ships are commonly found on postcards and posters which can be used to decorate the walls.

The easiest way to set the theme is to find one item that your little guy just loves and then build the room around that item. There are just so many ways to create a nautical theme; you can incorporate surf boards, lighthouses, shells and even sand art. Whatever you and your little boy choose this will be a room that you will want to grow with him and be a room the both of your will love to share.
