Tip #1: Choose a Paint Color That Will Grow with the Preteen
A preteen may be tempted to choose a hot pink, neon green or some other color that will lose it's appeal in their teenage years. A way to combat this is to stick with the color they are going for, but in a more adult shade. For example, instead of hot pink, show the preteen darker shades of pink. Remember, they will still be able to work hot pink into the room with the accessories and bedding because different shades of the same color can be combined.
Tip #2: Shop Flea Markets for Furniture
Flea markets are a great place to find deals on furniture. Best of all, flea markets often have pieces that need a little bit of love. For example, you may find a desk that needs sanding and painting. This is perfect for a preteen bedroom because not only will you stick to your budget, but the preteen can choose the colors and accessories for the furniture, such as a decorative knobs. The piece can then be donated as they get older or redecorated to suit their teenage tastes.
Tip #3: Have Fun with Wall Decals
Wall decals are an inexpensive way to decorate a preteen bedroom. Packages of wall decals can be purchased rather inexpensively and then added to walls and furniture. These decals are easy to remove as the preteen becomes a teen and won't damage surfaces. These are a great way to decorate used pieces of furniture and add bright colors that can easily be removed later on.
Tip #4: Use Storage Cabinets for Hidden Toy Storage and Display Space
Large storage cabinets can be purchased discount department stores for around $50. These are the perfect way to preteens to hide toys when they want to. The outside of the piece also gives the child room to display posters, wall decals, cork boards and dry erase boards. All of which can be changed as the child become a teen. Not to mention that the cabinet will come in useful for additional clothing, video game and movie storage as they get older.
Tip #5: Get the Most From Fabrics
Bedding can be expensive, but a great way to stick to your budget is to purchase bedding that's reversible. This gives the preteen more than one look. After choosing the bedding choose curtains, pillows, rugs and other fabric accessories to match. You might also want to purchase a couple other sheet sets that match the bedding.
