Decorating a Set of Stairs for Christmas

Christmas Decorations Can Add Instant Holiday Cheer to a Staircase

An often overlooked area of the home in terms of Christmas decorations is the staircase. In many cases, the stairs will be draped with a Christmas garland, but there is plenty of room left for adding a fun and personal touch to the Christmas season when a really nice staircase is present in the home. This article is going to present five fun ideas.

Christmas Lights with Picture Strings

This is a fun, quick and easy Christmas craft and decoration. Take a plain string of Christmas lights in a yellow or white color and a package of ornament hooks. Make photocopies of several favorite pictures from past Christmas days and use a hole-punch to make a hole in a corner or in the upper center of the picture. Run the lower portion of the hook through the hole then push it closed. Tie a string around the upper portion of the hook, and then tie the string to the green wire portion of the Christmas lights. String the lights along the stair railing. When doing this make sure that no pictures are dangling near a Christmas light or could slide down to a position where they would. When the lights are on, a unique illuminated tribute to the family of the house will be visible for family and friends alike.

Decorating with Foliage

The stairway garland may be a Christmas classic, but it is with good reason. The image of the evergreen is pure holiday. Incorporate some of this greenery and some red Christmas flowers, like Poinsettias, into a fun drape for the stairway spindles.

Red Stairway Runner

A Christmas themed stairway runner is a fun idea and holiday expression, but a red runner is highly practical and can be carried over from Christmas until past Valentine's day. This red runner not only adds bold color to drab winter weather, but a seasonal runner also helps protect the stairs or fitted carpeting from winter tracking during the harshest weather of the year.

Presents on Every Stair

If the stairway is wide enough, consider adding a small decoration or embellishment to every stair. This can take the form of a small present wrapped in holiday paper with a different wrapping present on every stair. The boxes do not have to contain actual gifts and can be merely facades. A fun way to do this is to save scraps of paper from larger presents given the previous Christmas. Then not only are the boxes a fun decoration but a visual memory trigger as well.

Stockings or Mistletoe

If a hallway is present at the end of a staircase and the floor below is visible, consider draping some Christmas stockings or holiday mistletoe over the heads of friends and family who are visiting. The best stockings to put in such a location are the variety that show up at generic Christmas parties or come in from school. The family stockings would be better served in a more intimate locale.

Have fun with stairs this holiday season and utilize them as the natural creativity board they are when it comes to Christmas decorations.
