Decorating an Upside Down Christmas Tree

Amanda Dyar
One of the new trends for the holiday season is an upside-down Christmas tree! This may sound preposterous, but it is actually a trend that dates back to the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages Europeans did it to symbolize the Trinity. But now, Christmas trees are fashioned with the tip pointing to heaven, and many believe an upside-down Christmas tree is ill-mannered or sacrilegious. The trees were just introduced to retailers for in-store exhibit, so more ornaments could be put on view at eye level to the buying consumer. And they left additional floor space to embrace an extra stock of decorations. On the other hand, an upside down Christmas tree has got numerous benefits. Having an upside down Christmas tree might sound outlandish but it might be helpful in tiny spaces. They leave more floor freedom and allow further decoration of the tree. Ornaments stand out better and are safer for children. When decorating the tree, most upside down Christmas trees comes pre-lit with the lights previously wired into the branches so they do not plunge downward which is more handy than trying to put the lights on after the setting up of the tree. Second, when placing ornaments you do not want them falling down so you need to take special care about fastening your Christmas tree decorations securely to the tree. Third, you can decorate the tree more around the base since there is plenty of room now. You have plenty of room to put small Christmas villages, trains, and presents. The fourth decorating tip would be to go a little different with your ornaments since the tree itself is so unique. You could try some zebra print ornaments, football, or maybe you could just decorate it in family pictures. Make the tree your own! The next five unique decorating tips will give you some ideas of how to make your tree unique and stand out this holiday season.

Christmas Card Images

This is a simple idea where you cut the images that you like from the previous year's Christmas cards and color the back. Then you display it on a colorful ribbon.

Cookies

Using cookies to decorate your tree is an old tradition much like that of the upside down Christmas tree. Simply make your cookies like you want and place a hole in them and use string or ribbon to hang. You can also wrap the cookies in clear cellophane wrap to keep them fresh a little longer or use gingerbread.

Origami

Origami is the old art of paper folding. You can make smaller and larger versions of your design in order to make your tree pop out to everyone that sees it.

Toys

You can also decorate your tree with all types of toys. All you have to do is attach string or ribbon to them and you have the perfect ornament.

Pipe Cleaners

You can enjoy doing this activity with your children. Chenille pipe cleaners can be twisted into any designs that you want and than easily wired onto the tree.
