Garlands
Garlands were used on Victorian Christmas trees. Create your own garlands using cranberries and popcorn. Lace also makes another great Victorian Christmas tree garland as well. For those concerned with having food items on your tree, purchase a garland that looks like it is made from popcorn and cranberries.
Doilies
Doilies can be used to create a variety of Victorian Christmas ornaments. Small doilies can be brushed with glue, sprinkled with glitter, and then hung on the tree using ribbons. Glue doilies in the shape of a cone and fill with potpourri. Use ribbons to attach these ornaments to a tree as well.
Victorian Christmas Cards
Victorian Christmas cards can make a lot of great Christmas ornaments. Cut out pretty pictures from the cards and glue them on construction paper or doilies. Hang them to the tree using ribbons.
Candles
The Victorians used candles to light their Christmas trees. This is not safe at all, so it is recommended that you purchase electric or battery powered candles to go on the Christmas tree. Twinkling white lights also give the feel of a flickering candle. DO not use multi-colored lights on a Victorian tree, as multi colored lights were not used during that period in History.
Bulbs
Simple bulbs in primary colors look great on a Victorian Christmas tree. Gold, silver, white, and red look the best.
Homemade Ornaments
Chances are your children have made a variety of homemade Christmas ornaments. Even though these ornaments may not have the direct appearance of a Victorian Christmas ornament, the Victorians used homemade ornaments to decorate their trees. Your child's creation would be proudly displayed on any Victorian Christmas tree so it should be proudly displayed on yours as well.
Victorian Christmas trees are elegant and a lot of fun to create. Finding ornaments at the store may be easy, but creating your own Christmas tree should prove to be a lot of fun. Making your own Christmas ornaments gives you plenty of opportunities to create your own Christmas memories. Christmas memories are what the Holiday season is all about.
