Decorating a Yellow Room: A Style Guide

The color yellow symbolizes hope, optimism, and inspiration. It is a pastel color that is radiant to the eyes, is rich and is luxurious. Painting a room yellow, especially a living room is something a lot of people don't buy into. This is often because the warm and loud color can be a challenge to decorate. But it can be a great joy and fun to decorate a yellow living room. Find below what I did with my yellow room.

My current living room is bright yellow. When I first saw this color while house hunting, I thought "oh my gosh!" How will someone ever decorate this bright banana mess! I was afraid I would not find colors that will blend well and make a statement in my living room. Over the years, I have been able to make this room one of the most beautiful and attractive in my house. The walls are yellow, and the carpet is a beautiful Berber Carpet of beige with brownish earthy tone to it. When I began decorating it, I thought of the colors that would go well with the yellow walls and the earthy, brown-tone beige rug.

For furniture, I bought a set of dark olive couch with hint of brown it. The couches match perfectly with the rug, which in turn give personality to the yellow. Because yellow is such a bright color, it brings out the beauty of the darkish olive couch. My coffee table and side tables are of the same dark brown woods as the finishes of the couches.

On the Yellow walls are family pictures and paintings in off gold and redwood frames. For my curtains, I have a beautiful dark red with golden floral on it, along with off-white Macramé Lace with sheers. Everything looks very colorful and bright, giving a lot of positive energy into the room. On either corners of the room are six feet long imitation plants. They make the room look lively with these plastic plants. I make every effort to keep the plants dust-free so that their shiny green hue will come through the sunny yellow wall. I love my living room for its vibrant energy and character.

If what you intend to decorate is a child's bedroom instead of a family room, you can still have fun painting the walls yellow. It will brighten the room a lot, and may look bright even at night. But it really gives a warm and inviting feel to the room. For the bed sheets, try colorful floral beddings against an off white bed post. The off white with the yellow are really beautiful combination for either a baby girl or a baby boy's room. The floral colors of the bedding will also enhance the brightness and give the room a fresh clean look of summer or spring.

Dressers and night stands in reddish or black wood color would be great. On the yellow walls, you can have a local artist paint beautiful pictures like a floral garden with bees pollinating the flowers. The flowers could be colors like forest green with red, pink or other colorful flowers that will add an interesting juxtaposition to the yellow.

You could also have stars painted on the wall or the ceiling with sparkly paint that emits shiny stars at night. Avoid picture frames on the room to eliminate the chances of objects falling on kids. Instead of frames, you can get colorful posters such as favorite Disney figures, characters, or shows. Or, you can also try favorite musicians, inspirational characters, or what ever you wish that comes in a poster form for the kid's room.

The room's carpeting should be what you feel you can keep up with. Wood flooring with a nice colorful area rug in the middle would look great. You could also do a nice earthy-toned carpet. Other furniture items like bean bags, rocking chair or sleigh chair can also be added to the corners. They come in many beautiful colors. Try not to overdo the yellow because it can become too intense and overpowering. Enjoy your yellow, sunny room year round!
