Decorative Decoupage Egg Craft Project

Difficulty Level: Easy

Jennifer Wagner
Decoupage crafts are super easy to make and a great idea for beginning and advanced crafters alike. Although simple to do, decoupage crafts look absolutely stunning when they are finished. Here we'll discuss how to make beautiful decoupage eggs for any purpose. Of course decoupage eggs are great for Easter, but they can also be displayed all year long, or for other seasonal holidays, depending on the pattern you choose to use for your decoupage project. You can literally customize this fun egg craft project for any time of year!

Materials needed to make decoupage eggs:

- Wood or Styrofoam eggs
- Acrylic paint
- Paintbrush
- Foam brush
- Patterned napkins or tissue paper
- Scissors
- Modge Podge, or other gloss decoupage glue
- Clear spray sealant

How to make decoupage eggs:

STEP 1 - Find a pattern you would like to see on your finished decoupage eggs. I recommend using paper napkins or decorative tissue paper simply because thin paper looks best, and will smooth easily on the egg.

STEP 2 - Cut out the pattern(s). You don't have to be precise. It's okay to have white edges or a border around the pattern itself. You can cut the pattern with a pair of scissors, or even (cleanly) tear them by hand.

STEP 3 - Paint the eggs a solid color of your choice. I would recommend a light color, or even white or cream, as this will showcase the pattern more clearly. Allow the paint to dry completely.

STEP 4 - Pour the Modge Podge in a dish. Dip the foam brush into the Modge Podge and apply it to the egg where you would like to add the paper.

STEP 5 - Position the paper over the glue, and use your finger to gently smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles. If you have a difficult time spreading out the paper, be patient and take your time. If the paper rips, just add a bit of Modge Podge to your fingertip and fuse the torn piece together.

STEP 6 - Continue adding more paper until the egg is entirely covered. You can overlap the images, or position them just close enough so they barely touch. It all depends on what you find visually appealing, and how you want your finished decoupage eggs to look.

STEP 7 - Once you have finished your decoupage egg craft project, spray them with a clear sealant. This will protect the delicate paper and prevent it from ripping. It will also give your finished project a shiny appearance.

TIP - Remember, you can make this egg craft project for all occasions, or even make decoupage makes that can be displayed all year long. Use Christmas paper or napkins for the holidays, pumpkin prints for Halloween and Thanksgiving, Victorian prints for all year display, and so on.

Additional notes - You can customize your decoupage eggs even further by adding decorative ribbon or cording with a hot glue gun. Or, if using Styrofoam eggs, consider inserting a thin dowel rod into the bottom of the eggs and adding them to an artificial flower display, or arrange them as a group in a decorative basket. You can also add glitter when you make decoupage eggs. There are many different things you can do to make this decoupage egg craft project truly unique.
