Every home, regardless of age, has at least one door that just will not stand fully open. Doorstops or door wedges are a necessary addition to most homes, eliminating a possible hazard to household occupants (especially running children).     Interesting topic, Gritts - not one I think about a lot today, but I do remember doorstops from times past. Actually, I have a fondness for doorstops - I've just 'stopped' using them.
