Decorative Fountains

Indoor and Outdoor Styles

A decorative fountain can add a touch of class and tranquility to your home decor or outdoor living space. Decorative fountains are made of many different types of materials such as metals, stones, ceramics, or marble. They operate with a small pump which pushes the water throughout the fountain system and can usually be plugged into any standard outlet. The price for fountains can range from under twenty dollars for a small table-top piece, to several thousand for a large, custom built outdoor feature.

Deciding where to place a fountain is the first step. Many people place a decorative fountain in their foyer to create a dramatic first impression when entering the home. Bedrooms are also ideal, as the sounds of a fountain make drifting off to sleep a peaceful pleasure. There are even small fountains made specifically sized and shaped for desk areas. If you want to add to the ambiance of your outdoor porch or patio, make sure that the fountain you select is weather-resistant and specifically made for outdoor use.

Once the location for the fountain is selected, the next step is to choose the style of the fountain. It should fit flawlessly within your existing home decor.

The most commonly found style of fountain is very modern. Sleek and clean, these fountains are generally made of various metals and often contain one or several lights which cast shadow and create depth against the metal. Such fountains can be small enough to fit on a coffee table, or large free-standing structures that require a whole wall to display them properly. No matter what the size, the tranquil effect is the same. Water flowing against metal creates a playful hum that can soothe even the busiest of minds.

The Asian style is also very popular in fountains. They are often similar to the modern style, with sharp lines and clean edges, but Asian style fountains are generally composed of natural elements, such as rocks and ceramics. These organic materials make this style the perfect compliment to an outdoor space. This style often includes moving elements, such as a marble ball which spins in the center of a small pool of water, balancing against the push of water. These moving elements add to the aesthetic charm and hypnotically soothing effect. This style is very versatile, as it combines the sharpness of a modern piece with the sophisticated materials of a more classical fountain.

Stone and marble fountains provide a classy, elegant effect. These are great for rooms with large classic pieces of furniture or antiques. Such fountains are available at specialty stores, but the materials used and the artistry involved often makes them more expensive than the common modern fountains that can be found at general home stores everywhere.

There is a vast selection of decorative fountains available, and with countless styles and functions, it's easy to find a fountain that compliments any home style and fits into any budget.
