Decorative Head Wraps: A Great Style for Relaxed, Transitioning, and Natural Hair

Looking for a Styling Break Without Resorting to Weaves? Try a Decorative Head Wrap!

When you're looking for new hair styling options, especially when you're transitioning from relaxed to natural hair, it is not hard to feel like you've run low on options. Try head wraps! When curls get old, braidouts get tired-- and weaves just aren't an option, a decorative head wrap can save the day! Bun-style head wraps are chic, and when paired with a cute pair of earrings, they can really set off an outfit. These head wraps can be worn by anyone: relaxed, natural, transitioning.... you name it! Wraps are even great styling options for those who are dealing with minor to complete hair loss.

Why Should You try a Basic Bun-Style Head Wrap?
1. Head wraps are inexpensive.
You can purchase your own fabric for about $2-5 per yard, or work with a scarf you already have on hand. I've found that for my head wraps, a single yard of fabric is all that is needed. If you want a larger, "look at me"/Erykah Badu inspired kind of head wrap, then 2 yards or more is suitable. You'll need fabric that is somewhat stretchy, breathable, and feels good against the hair. If your fabric is too slippery, it will slip off as the day wears on. If it's too scratchy, it can rough up your hair. Head wrapping fabrics can also run you hundreds of dollars as well, but for a basic bun-style head wrap this isn't necessary.

2. Head wraps can be dressed up, or dressed down!
One of the greatest luxuries of head wrapping is how a simple change in the fabric and a donning of earrings or a necklace can take the wrap from everyday casual to sophisticated outing ready. Some head wrap designs are basic and sit low on the back of the head, while others are quite elaborate and may tower high above the wearer's head. Fabrics can be purchased in a variety of colors to suit the wearer's purposes. Some fabrics are made from high quality silks and may be embellished with gold trims and patterns for those looking for more formal wrap looks.

3.) Head wraps can significantly cut styling time down.
When you're wearing a head wrap, you don't have to worry about using heat to straighten your hair or making sure its combed through, shining, or laid down. A head wrap is the ultimate styling manipulation break. You can literally smooth on some moisturizer, loosely secure your hair in a bun, and cover. No guess work, no planning, no disappointments!

4.) Head wraps are protective!
Head wraps are a great protective style. They keep your hands out of your hair and give your hair an opportunity to really rest. They also protect the hair from the environment and act as a good buffer to both sun, wind, and rain. Head wraps are popular in the summer months to keep hair secured and off the face, and in the winter months to keep head cradled and warm.

Give head wraps a try. You might be surprised at how regal you look in even the basic bun-style wrap!

I like head wraps a lot and wish they were even more acceptabl than they are. Most associate them with a bad hair day or some type of religion. I used to wear them when I lived overseas all the time because it was hard to find a hair dresser for black hair care. Anyhow, great articles.

I wear hats and scarves all the time. They can really make your face stand out if you get the right one.
