Decorum Trumps Truth

Theresa O'Keefe
Let me start by stating that I supported and voted for President Obama in our last presidential election. Let me also state that my great-grandparents on my father's side fled to America due to the potato famine in Ireland, and my grandparents on my mother's side came to America from Sicily to find a better life. So, I understand the burning desire of individuals not from the USA to want to come here for a chance at a better life.

However, my grandparents and great-grandparents came to this country ***LEGALLY***. They did not sneak over here and live for years as a sub-culture until the American government "gave" them amnesty. My grandparents and great-grandparents learned English, learned trades that helped them get a piece of the "American Dream," and they assimilated into America. They did all this without "loosing" their cultural identities and without violating any laws.

During the speech given by President Obama on Wednesday September 9, 2009 he specifically stated that health care wouldn't be provided to illegal aliens. Representative Joe Wilson called out, very loudly and publicly "You lie." Now, Representative Wilson has been labeled a heckler. He was "forced" to apologize for his "outburst." Vice President Joe Biden admonished Representative Wilson for his "outburst." The Republican Party on the whole has sided AGAINST Representative Wilson. WHY????

If, President Obama were telling the truth that health coverage wouldn't be extended to people here illegally in our country why would he be so upset or distraught that he was called a liar in front of the country? All he needs to do is explain what steps are going to be taken to assure illegal immigrants are not provided healthcare under this proposed plan.

Last I checked we still live in the United States of America, NOT Unidos de Estados de Mexico! So, Representative Wilson shouted "You lie." Why should he NOT shout out the TRUTH!!! I live in Southern California and personally I am sick and tired, where unemployment is near 12%, where state income taxes are one of the highest in the nation, and we just recently got hit with another hike in sales tax. I'm tired of working my tail off and having my hard earned dollars go to a system that openly supports individuals who are clearly BREAKING THE LAW!!

Do people understand that we currently have laws on the books that state being here in the USA without authorization is **ILLEGAL**? Do you know of any other law that can be openly and blatantly broken by people and yet they have no fear at all of being prosecuted? Sure, most of us have broken the speed limit, and at some point I'd wager we've all received tickets for this infraction.

Not only are illegal immigrants here openly living amongst us, but they collect services that should be going to legitimate American citizens. It's appalling, aggravating and infuriating. Especially since our government has a practice in place to keep individuals from collecting aide they are not entitled to receiving. It's called: Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements. The acronym is SAVE. This program checks to assure the person or persons applying for benefits are truly eligible to apply. If they are found to be ineligible no one deports them (though in my opinion they should be deported, since they are here ILLEGALLY). The only thing that happens is they are disqualified from receiving the benefit they are applying for.

If President Obama were truly sincere in his statement that the illegal population would not be receiving healthcare under his proposed bill, then why didn't he state the plan would REQUIRE the use of SAVE? I'll tell you why. He didn't say this because this will be a way to satisfy the groups who have been fighting to allow the illegal immigrants to stay in this country. Amnesty is at the very least a stalled issue at this time, so if the illegal immigrants can't get "instant citizenship" then at least they'll get to enjoy the benefits provided to legitimate citizens.

We are the United States of America. Our country was built by immigrants. People who came here to have a better life, and escape the poverty and political torment they were suffering in their respective countries. However, our ancestors came here legally and went through a process. In some cases it could have taken 5, 10 or more years to finally be allowed to come to America.

I personally am engaged to a man who is not from this country. He's from Bulgaria. We love each other and want to be married, but I can't just tell him to "hop a plane to America so we can get married." I have to go through the immigration process. I have to file papers with immigration. I have to prove that I'm able to financially sponsor him because even after he's approved to come here so we can get married he won't be able to work right away. He'll have to wait approximately 6 months or longer to get approved to work LEGALLY here in the USA. Plus, before he's approved to come here he has to go through background checks (as do I). He can't be a felon or married to someone in his country to have some contagious disease like TB (tuberculosis).

As you can see I'm no stranger to the immigration process, and I find it insulting and infuriating that while people like my fiancée and I go through the proper immigration process others sneak into this country and live like they are ENTITLED to everything America has to offer.

It's time Americans on the whole wake up! Contact your representatives, your senators, and even President Obama. Tell them you're sick and tired of people who are here illegally getting the benefits of your hard earned money that you contribute via the tax system.

To Representative Wilson, I applaud you sir. I don't know anything about your personal beliefs nor had I ever heard of you prior to your "outburst," but good for you for having the courage to say what needed to be said. We are letting our country go down the toilet thanks to "political correctness." It needs to stop. We all need to wake up before America becomes one of the Third World Countries other people are trying to escape from.
