Decoupage a Designer Country Wicker Wastebasket

Pam Parent

Turn a functional, ordinary wicker wastebasket into an extraordinary designer accent piece. This designer country wastebasket will look charming in any room. I have chosen a beautiful country floral print for this decoupage project. When choosing your fabric, make sure it has a distinct floral pattern that can be cut into pieces and later used to decoupage your wastebasket. I have also used old cotton dresses with a floral print for my decoupage pieces. It is a great way to recycle old clothes. Once your fabric is chosen, select a color from your fabric. This color choice will be the acrylic paint color that will be painted on the top and bottom of the wastebasket.

Supplies:

  • Wicker wastebasket
  • Scissors
  • 1 paint brush
  • 1 foam brush
  • Modge Podge
  • Acrylic paint
  • 1/2 yard floral fabric
  • Clear varnish spray

Directions:

1. Carefully cut the floral pattern pieces from your fabric. Make sure to cut as much of the floral detail as possible. The amount of pieces needed for this decoupage project will depend on how many pieces are needed for the design you choose for your wicker wastebasket.

2. Place your wastebasket on a covered work area. Pour a small amount of paint on an old dish. Paint the top edge of the wastebasket using your regular paint brush. Let dry. Turn the wastebasket over. Paint the bottom edge of the basket. Let dry.

3. Now it is time to decide the pattern and placement of your floral pieces. I decoupaged my floral pieces sporadically around the entire wastebasket for a pretty country look. How you decoupage your floral pieces will be according to your taste.

4. Spread some Modge Podge on the back and front of your first fabric piece using your sponge brush. Place your first piece on your wastebasket. Carefully dab the piece with a lightly damp sponge. Make sure this fabric piece is secure to the wicker. When I see the ridges of the wicker coming through the fabric, I know it is secure. Repeat this step for the remaining fabric pieces. Let dry.

5. Check to make sure all the decoupaged pieces are secure to the wicker. If there are any edges of the floral pieces sticking up, reapply some decoupage to the those edges. Then lightly dab those edges with a damp sponge. Let dry.

6. Once you are satisfied that all the pieces are secure to the wicker, it is time to seal your decoupaged piece. In a well ventilated room, spray your designer country wastebasket with clear varnish. Let dry.
