Deep Conditioning for Hair: Olive Oil, Cholesterol and 3-Minute Miracle

Christine M.
Have you been over styling your hair lately? I have, too. I have been swimming every day for exercise for a few months now, and while my body is becoming fit and toned, my hair is suffering. The chlorine, along with using my typical arsenal of styling aids such as my blow dryer, curling iron, and occasionally my straightening iron, has turned my hair into a ratty mess.

There are always such mixed opinions as to what to do if your hair is in this condition. My stylist suggests more expensive products in order to counteract the effects of the chlorine, while many articles that I read now days suggest not weighing down your hair with any additional products. Confused by what to do in order to solve my hair dilemma, I went to my local Walgreen's and bought some deep conditioning remedies that I thought could help my problem. Surprisingly, some of the most inexpensive items I bought turned out to be the most helpful. I'll make a list here of what has helped my hair the most after those long sessions in the pool.

Olive oil: That's right, folks. Plain old olive oil works wonders for damaged hair like mine. This is what I did: after shampooing and conditioning your hair, apply the olive oil to all parts of your head, but pay most attention to the roots. Take a warm towel (I like to put mine in the dryer for a few minutes to get it nice and toasty) and wrap your hair in this. Leave it on for an hour or two while you read, do homework, or do activities around the house that aren't too strenuous. Rinse it out thoroughly, because if you don't, you will surely end up with some very slick hair that will look like it hasn't been washed. You can condition with normal conditioner after this step if you'd like, but this probably isn't necessary. Your hair will be a lot softer than before and will have a silky sheen.

Aunt Helene's Cholesterol: This thick substance will work wonders on your stressed out hair. I like to apply this deep conditioner to every part of my head and massage it in for a couple of minutes. After that, I just let it sit there for a couple of minutes and then rinse it out like normal. If you want, you can wrap your hair up in a towel and leave it sitting like that, but I've found that a couple of minutes is more than enough. While this stuff doesn't smell particularly good and comes in a big, unattractive tub, it made my hair soft and took care of the frizz.

Aussie's 3-Minute Miracle: This was nothing short of a miracle. It almost seemed as though this stuff replaced my kinky, frizzy hair and replaced it with someone else's smooth waves. This is by far my favorite remedy of the three that I tried. I just followed the directions and left this on my hair for three minutes while I bathed. This deep conditioner left my hair smelling yummy, my hair was soft, and I only had to spend three minutes of my life using this product!
