Deep Fried Kool-Aid Appearing at Fairs

Karen Barnes

At a San Diego, California, country fair, deep fried Kool-Aid dough balls were being sold as a new novelty treat to fair goers. The deep fried doughnut-hole looking Kool-Aid treats aren't the first weird fried food to hit fairs in years past.

Jennifer Montenegro, product of of KWCH Morning show out of Wichita, was wondering if this new novelty would hit the Kansas State Fair this fall. It's not known at this time if those odd doughnut-hole looking things will get this far across the country, it would be interesting to see if it does and what Kansans will think of them.

Last year at the Kansas State Fair, Krispy Kreme cheeseburgers were the big hit at the Kansas State Fair. The other crazy deep fried foods like Twinkies, Snicker Bars, and a few of the other novelties were sold along the food court at the fair.

The company, Chicken Charlie's, debuted this latest deep fried craze recently at the California fair mentioned at the beginning of this article. Some of the fair goers liked them but preferred their deep fried Klondike Bars over the Kool-Aid treat.

One person said after trying the Kool-Aid dough balls, he wasn't sure if he could stomach eating frog legs deep fried by the same vendors. Considering frog legs taste like "chicken," how could they be worse to eat than fried Kool-Aid.

Crazy trends like the deep fried candy bars, snack cakes, and now Kool-Aid is one reason Americans are over weight and spend far more at local fairs on food than they do on rides and other entertainment at these events.

While a price of the Kool-Aid balls weren't mentioned, you can bet your bottom dollar they won't come cheap at any local fair they come to.

For those living or visiting the Del-Mar, San Diego County area, through July 4, 2011, you will be able to try the latest craze in fair food. Be sure to check out the link at the top of the article for hours and days of operation for the fair.

All five of us in our family are going to the Minnesota State Fair this year. They ALWAYS have some new deep-fried thing on a stick. I'll be watching to see if they have this one.
