Deep-Fried Kool-Aid: What Will They Think of Next?

Every year when fair season rolls around, there's a new deep-fried sensation. From Twinkies to Oreos to beverages like lemonade and Coke, it seems that nothing is safe from the fryer. This year, deep-fried Kool-Aid is all the rage.

Deep-fried Kool-Aid is a lot different from the colorful sugary drink that comes in a packet. In fact, the result looks more like a doughnut hole. A batter consisting of flour, water and cherry Kool-Aid is plopped into the fryer. When it emerges, it is golden on the outside, red on the inside and dusted with powdered sugar.

The mastermind behind the concoction is Charlie Boghosian. Boghosian once set his sights on becoming an FBI agent. Yet, according to The Star, at 14, he took a job at the San Diego State Fair at a charbroiled corn stand.

He never turned back.

First, he sold pressure-fried chicken and then set his sights on deep-fried desserts and delights. In 2007, he introduced deep-fried Coca Cola. In 2008, it was "a deep-fried White Castle burger, spam and pop tarts," according to L.A. Weekly. Some of his most popular creations include deep-fried avocados, deep-fried frogs' legs and last year's fried Klondike. The list of deep-fried foods goes on and on. In fact, there's over 100 "Boghosian" fried inventions. It's like a never-ending science experiment.

Yet, fried Kool-Aid is not the only masterpiece that "Chicken Charlie" will be unveiling this year. He's also introducing FryBQ Ribs, with a side of fries, and a totally fried brownie.

Boghisian not the only person who has honed in on the fascination with fried and, in general, unique foods. At the Alameda County fair, there's going to be fried jellybeans. Fair concessionaire Jungle George's will also be offering up deep fried butter, raccoon on a stick and chocolate-covered scorpions and larvae, according to Albany Patch. Yum!

Of course, it is these deep-fried culinary delights that contribute to America's ever increasing waistline. Still, people are trying it and loving it.

If you are eager to try some new fried indulgences, check out the San Diego Fair from until July 4^th, the OC Fair from July 15 to Aug. 14 and the L.A. Fair from Sept. 3-Oct. 2. You'll pay $5.95 for four Kool-Aid donut holes.
