Deep-fried Pepsi a Hit at State Fairs

Nick Meyer
The State Fair is always a good place to go to sample foods that you would never think of eating in everyday life. State Fair favorites include things like corn dogs, elephant ears, funnel cakes, and barbecued pork products that most people are afraid to eat because of the fat and calories that are included in each food item.

But since most people only eat these types of things every once in a while, new additions are constant at State Fairs where taste rules the day. The newest creation at Midwest State Fairs including Indiana and Michigan is the deep-fried Pepsi item, which is a take on all the other types of deep-fried items that have come out in recent years.

State Fair concession stands aren't afraid to deep fry just about anything including Twinkies, strawberries, and candy bars like Snickers. So, what is deep-fried Pepsi, you ask?

It's actually pieces of funnel cake dough with some pepsi flavoring mixed in so that it tastes like cola. Some people think it tastes a lot like a donut, kind of like the ones you get from the cider mill in the fall with their tender, flaky texture.

I saw a good amount of people flocking to the deep-fried pepsi stand at the Michigan State Fair when I went and the item has been a big hit in Indiana as well. While the name "deep-fried Pepsi" might be a bit confusing to people at first, it's really no different than what other people have done with soda-flavored candies and bubble gums and things of that nature.

Deep-fried Pepsi will probably have a decent future ahead of it but it's hard to tell if the item is more of a featured attraction or merely something that State Fairs will keep on their menus but not promote. After all, the stands that sell deep-fried Pepsi already have a lot of popular fair items such as funnel cakes, elephant ears, and corn dogs to dip into their friers already that people are going to want a little more often than deep-fried Pepsi, most likely.

So if you're curious to try deep-fried Pepsi, go out and grab some at a local State Fair as soon as possible because you never know when it might be gone.
