Deepwater Horizon Rig Explosion, Oil Spill of 2010 By the Numbers

Jeff Musall
As we mark the one-year anniversary of the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig and the subsequent environmental catastrophe resulting from it, here are some numbers to think about.

11- the number of workers killed in the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig.

4- the number of major oil spills seen in the Gulf of Mexico over the last 50 years.

1/3 - the amount of America's oil production coming from the Gulf of Mexico.

4.9 million - the number of barrels of oil the U.S. government estimates were dumped into the Gulf during the spill.

15 - the number of countries (plus the European Union) helping in the spill recovery effort. Canada, Mexico, Norway, Japan, Germany, France, UK, Tunisia, Belgium, Qatar, Kenya, China, Russia, Netherlands, and Sweden joined the EU in helping America with the response.

1.8 million - gallons of dispersant used, the disposition of which is still not fully understood.

5 times normal - the amount of the hydrocarbon ethylbenzene found in a man's blood months after diving in the Gulf during the aftermath of the oil spill.

3 times normal - the amount of the same hydrocarbon found in the bloodstream of a 3-year-old who was exposed when his family visited the Gulf Coast post-spill.

4- the number of jumbo shrimp estimated to be eaten per week in a study suggesting hazardous chemicals were found to be at a safe number in Gulf seafood.

60,000- the number of claimants in a lawsuit directed at rig owner Transocean Ltd. Florida Gov. Rick Scott decided Tuesday not to join the suit. The deadline to join was Wednesday.

52 ft. - the length of the yacht "Bob" that BP CEO Tony Hayward went home to the U.K. to watch race while the oil was unrelentingly flowing into the Gulf.

28-the number of dead dolphins found this year.

18- how many of them were newborns.

5.6 billion - BP's fourth quarter profits from 2010 in dollars.

4 - of the first 10 post-disaster deep drill permits granted for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, four will be drilled by Transocean LTD, the company sharing responsibility for the spill.

I'm not buying that the gulf is doing so well. All that oil is lurking somewhere. I wonder if there is a home testing kit you can run your fish through before eating it.
