I'm lucky for being able to enjoy these experiences as a child, learning everything from the professionals (unlike most other hunters). Most newbie hunters will first assume hunting a deer is like shooting birds; you wait for your prey and shoot. Nothing can be further from the truth when it comes to hunting these beautiful creatures.
My first tip is to always remain patient. The deer can sense your perspiration and excitement before you even see them. It is very important to always stay calm and focused on your task. Simply sitting in one spot and waiting for the deer isn't considered hunting in my family - you must engage the animal properly and use every bit of evidence available to locate the deer trails.
Second, never allow yourself to be under the influence of Alcohol while hunting. Not only is this incredibly dangerous, it isn't the way successful men would hunt when the life of their families depended on a successful kill. Sure, it's fun to go out with the boys and have a few, but hunting is not a game and should always be taken seriously. So many unfortunate accidents can be prevented by following this one tip alone.
Third, bring a silencer for your hunting weapon if they are legal in your area. Nothing scares away Deer more than hearing gunshots. Why kill just one Deer when you can silently sneak up on the whole family with the precision of a Navy Seal. It sounds bad, but technology is on our side with this one - use it.
Fourth, never disrespect your weapon. This includes shooting up in the sky, shooting at squirrels, letting someone else shoot your weapon or leaving your weapon unattended. Always be conscience where your nuzzle is pointing and don't be afraid to remove your finger from the trigger when you don't see any deer. Respecting your weapon will always ensure you don't accidentally kill someone.
Fifth and finally, you must always be absolutely silent if you want to get those 12 point bucks. Smaller deer are easier because, well, they're stupid. The big deer are going to know exactly where you are if you're being stupid just like their kin.
Take these tips seriously and you'll definitely be successful on your next deer hunting trip.
