Many of you know Daniel Craig from his role as the new James Bond, having come out with the newest James Bond film called Quantam of Solace only weeks ago. However, as "Defiance" proves, Craig is an incredible actor and a rising star in Hollywood. Interestingly enough, this is the second film in which Craig has played the role of a "tough Jew," having also appeared as an Israeli soldier in "Munich."
Defiance is a brilliant film that takes place during the Holocaust in Poland during World War 2. Daniel Craig, who plays the role of Tuvia Bielski has escaped the Nazi soldiers after fleeing into the forest. The Nazis have killed his wife and parents, and have rounded up his entire village, sending them to the concentration camps where they await their death. Craig is joined in his escape by his brother Zus Bielsky, played by actor of Liev Schreiber. Schreiber also proves to be an incredible actor and both he and Craig are masterful in their roles.
In the forest, the Bielsky brothers fight to stay alive in running from the German soldiers, using the forest as their shelter. Within the forest, they come across groups of Jewish people who have been displaced by the Nazis, having had their villages burned to the ground and their families rounded up into concentration camps. In the forest, Craig becomes the commander of the makeshift village which as the movie progresses, amasses several hundred people. Craig takes command of the village, organizing food gathering groups, and putting each person to work making shelters, cooking food, or standing guard for protection.
The Bielsky brothers soon come across a Russian brigade of soldiers who are fighting the Nazis. Zus soon enlists in the brigade along with some of the Jewish men in the forest village while Daniel Craig stays with the remaining men and women of the village as their leader.
The movie resumes telling the story of Zus' travels with the Russian brigade, showing action scenes fighting the Nazis. In one such scene, Zus and his comrades daringly enter a Nazi command post, killing the Nazi soldiers inside so that they could steal much needed medicine for the village. The film also deals with the issues of morality, in whether the Jews should take up arms to fight the Germans or to stay on the run and try to keep on surviving. At one juncture during the film, Craig's leadership of the village is questioned, as an internal fight emerges to apportion rations of food among the people in the village. Craig ultimately kills the man in charge of leading the uprising against him. In the village, Tuvia, Zus, and their youngest brother Asael, played by actor Jamie Bell, all find love with women in the village.
The crucial part of the film occurs towards the climax of the film, when the German soldiers start closing in on the village, near the start of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The Jewish village must run and fight for their lives against the Nazis, with Craig leading the Jewish people in their determination to simply survive.
I won't give away the ending but it is packed with action and it is filled with drama until the very end.
You have got to see this film and Daniel Craig without a doubt, proves that he is one of the best actors of our time with his newest film.
