Defining What it Means to Have a Positive Attitude

Sean Kaye
Everyone knows that one of the requirements for success is having a positive attitude. All the self-improvement gurus teach their listeners to develop and maintain a positive attitude. Unfortunately, different people have different ways of defining what a positive attitude is, how to create it, and how to maintain it. This provides a stumbling block for many people as they work toward the development of a positive attitude.

Correctly defining positive attitude should include being affirmative and certain. Tolerance and forgiveness should also be included. Overconfidence and intolerance as well as demanding absolute acceptance by others do not promote a positive attitude and are actually counterproductive.

Having goals and visions that are deemed worthwhile are also aspects of having a positive attitude. Focusing on these thoughts will help mold what is to be produced. On the other hand, if these thoughts on a goal include taking advantage of others and having a negative impact, they will instead produce negative results. Simply utilizing a fair plan of action when creating and maintaining goals will help yield positive thoughts that will coincide with those goals and visions.

Most people are limited in their ability to produce a positive attitude. Negative influences from others, disappointments, and failures are all contributors to this limitation. Although it is possible for anyone to develop a positive attitude, it requires hard work and a strong commitment to remaining positive. Learning positive thinking skills and practicing these skills regularly are necessary steps along the path to developing a positive attitude. Furthermore, refraining from negative thinking is a necessary but challenging aspect for maintaining this way of thinking.

Possibly the hardest part of maintaining a positive attitude is to reject the negative influences that exist in everyday life and in other people. Allowing the negative forces to influence thought processes requires no work at all. They come naturally and remain by simply thinking about them. Everyone striving for a positive attitude must learn to avoid or quickly stop any negative thoughts as they occur. Replacing these thoughts with positive thoughts and feelings requires hard work but becomes easier with practice.

Having a positive attitude is not as easy as simply smiling and saying positive things; it's a way of life that is practiced daily. Positive thinking takes time and habits must be built that contribute to success. One of the few areas of life we have control over is our thoughts and attitudes. A willingness to accept this and take control of our thoughts is crucial to the success of developing a positive attitude.
