Dehydration - Home Remedies that Cure

KOlds
You are dehydrated when your body has used more water than you have put into it. This occurs for many reasons. The most common reasons are diarrhea, vomiting, fever, excessive sweating and exposure to extreme heat. What ever the reasons are though you will have to control the lose of water before you can restore your hydration level in the body. There are also many cures for dehydration. However the best cure for dehydration is prevention. Some other natural cures are: taking a cold shower or bath, eating a banana, take in electrolytes, and just as important avoid some food and drinks.

Prevention

As is often said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. To prevent dehydration simple make sure that you have plenty of liquids for your activities of the day. Sounds simple right. Most of the time it is. Our bodies release water every time we breathe, sweat, or go to the bathroom. We replace this water on a daily bases. When we know our bodies will or have released extra water we should drink extra water.

For instance if you know that tomorrow it will be 103 degrees outside and you're going to a picnic then you can start preparing tonight by drinking an extra glass of water. You can also prepare by packing lemon or lime juice. These refresh the body with electrolytes.

Eat a Banana

Bananas are high in potassium and sodium which help you to use the water that you take in. Eating a banana may help reduce any dehydration affects. According to ElectroCarbs avocados, citrus fruits (oranges), green leafy vegetables, milk, and nuts are also high in potassium. Other foods also high in potassium are mangos, pineapples, pawpaw and coconut milk.

Water Inside and Outside

Taking a shower or even better a salt bath are also great ways to recover from dehydration. With a fever or diarrhea taking a long bath can help to keep the water in your body or replace the water that you have already lost. Your skin is the biggest organ in your body and will absorb water as you soak. Remember to continue your intake of water as well. Drinking water is the most important way to replenish your body.

Rebuild Electrolytes

Rebuilding your electrolytes is important. Along with loosing water you have also been loosing electrolytes. You can replace them by using a electrolyte package and making a drink, buying a smart water or making your own. Here is a recipe I found at My Home Remedies

Electrolyte Water:

1 Quart Water
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon table salt
3 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt substitute (lite salt) - if you have it. Its ok if not.

OR

Drink a cup of water with 1/4 teaspoon salt, 3 teaspoons sugar, and 2 teaspoons lime juice.

Stay Away

While you are looking through your cabinet deciding what to take, here are a few things that you should avoid. Avoid eating a heavy meal right after dehydration. Your body needs water to process food. Eating will put the water to work in your intestines instead of replenishing your bodily supply. Also avoid sodas or any other caffeinated products. These also use water to digest and will deplete you further. Stay away from alcohol as well. It also dehydrates you. That is what a hangover actually is.

Remember that your body is mostly made up of water. Water is one of the most important things you will ever put into your body. Dehydration can be very dangerous. If symptoms continue go to your doctor.

Here are also a few helpful websites. You may not have everything laying around but with enough information you will recover fast.
