FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW CASTLE - On Saturday, October 14, 2006 the Delaware Air National Guard 60th Anniversary Open House and Air Show will highlight the 60th anniversary celebration of the unit founded in 1946.
The event, free and open to the public, starts 8:00 a.m., with all activities ending at 5:00 p.m. and gates closing at 6:00 p.m. The event is on the Air Guard side of the New Castle County Airport, 2600 Spruance Drive, New Castle, DE, zip code 19720.
There is no general public parking on base, but we have two free secure parking locations off base for the general public, and 24 free shuttle buses will operate all day to transport people to the air base and back.
The largest parking location is fewer than four miles away from the air base at the General Motors Wilmington Assembly plant, located at 801 Boxwood Road, Wilmington, DE, zip code 19804. Use Gate 4 (the West gate); clearly marked on Boxwood Road.
The second parking location is one-half a mile away from the air base at 12 Penns Way, New Castle, DE, zip code 19720, off Commons Boulevard, with several parking lots available. Penns Way is on the opposite side of Commons Boulevard from the New Castle County Government Center. Handicap parking is available at both off base parking locations with placard. Only handicapped personnel with special needs may park on the air base.
The all-day Open House includes demonstrations and exhibits put on by units of the Air and Army National Guard and the Air Force, showcasing their mission, people, and capabilities. There are various activities to educate and entertain children. Plenty of food and drink will be available for a modest charge for the thousands of visitors expected.
The flying part of the Air Show is 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with 15 participating aircraft. There will be fly-bys of modern fighter and transport aircraft, plus vintage aircraft and civilian aircraft aerobatic acts. The all-day ground portion will have 27 current military aircraft in the Air Force and Army inventories along with vintage military aircraft from World War II to the present.
Global Power for America
We are honored to have three aircraft performing in our air show after flying DIRECT from Arlington, Va., after they participate in the Air Force Memorial dedication that morning. A B-2 Spirit multi-role bomber, a World War II vintage B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, and an F-22A Raptor Fighter will fly over the new structure in an onsite dedication ceremony that will begin at 1:30 p.m. Then, the three aircraft fly north to Delaware to join the 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. air show in New Castle in an exciting aerial entrance. Editors can find photos and artwork on the Air Force aircraft inventory, 1940s to present, at http://www.af.mil/art/. Fact sheets on all aircraft are located here: http://www.af.mil/library/factsheets/.
The annual Special Olympics Delaware Plane Pull runs from 8:00 a.m. to Noon. Over a dozen teams will compete in a fun-filled test of strength to pull a C-130 transport aircraft a set distance in the fastest time.
Lt. Col. Stephen Caton, the Air Show Director, said, "This will be an enjoyable, family-friendly event. We've assembled an impressive performance of air power, from World War II vintage aircraft through aircraft now used in daily combat in Southwest Asia. It will be the largest air show in 10 years in New Castle County. We welcome residents of Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and beyond. Coming just one weekend after the Dover Air Force Base Air Show, we expect a large turnout."
The Lieutenant Governor of Delaware, John Carney, acting on behalf of Governor Ruth Ann Minner (who is the Commander in Chief of the Delaware National Guard, but whose recent knee surgery prevents her from attending) will attend and has the key role in an 11:00 a.m. ceremony with a military formation. A number of other distinguished visitors from civilian and military leadership will also attend.
