A variety of complications that are beyond the mother or the doctor's control can occur during a pregnancy to necessitate or bring about a preterm delivery. Thanks to new advances in medical technology and technique, many more premature babies are surviving to go home with their family, but it's still no easy road.
Being a preterm baby means a lot of normally benign illness can become deadly like RSV. RSV is a viral infection of the lungs that affect most children before age two in the form of a cold, but to a preemie with underdeveloped lungs, its life threatening.
Many children born prematurely also suffer from developmental disabilities which may not be detectable in the nursery but that show up later in life.
Other complications include chronic lung disease, and in some cases, a condition called PDA-patent ductus arterious. It occurs when the duct in the heart that is used by the fetus in-utero, to shunt blood from the inactive lungs to the rest of the body, does not close. Usually the duct would close within a few weeks of birth but when it does not, congestive heart failure can follow.
For the mother, having a baby before 37 weeks gestation can mean constant worry and heart ache for her baby, lengthy and expensive hospital stays, isolation from her baby, constant or overwhelming guilt and for some mothers, no stretch marks?
Yes indeed, some mothers have actually elected to have early C-section deliveries to avoid the massive growth and therefore stretching that occurs in the last month of pregnancy in the hopes that they will be able to prevent unsightly stretch marks and saggy skin.
These so called mothers have decided to risk the complications and potential consequences to their child to maintain an attractive midsection.
Those last few months of explosive growth are not a simple growth in size for the baby. During that time the baby is maturing, and I mean in the sense that when he/she is born they will be able to bear the strain of life outside of the womb. With out that necessary time, the child will suffer at first if not afterwards as well. The guilty doctor may give the child a clean bill of health but does he/she really feel okay? How do we know that although they may seem healthy, they are not actually uncomfortable and miserable?
I won't point out any names among the celebrities who have but I will say that if someone decides to become a mother, they should know what it means and be prepared to make ALL of the sacrifices necessary.
