This one thing would have to be my computer. I have a Dell Dimension L600r. It is a desktop, and it's beige in color. I use this computer on a daily basis for practically everything. I don't go a single day without doing something on it, with the exception of when the weather knocks it off-line.
When I get up each morning, I log on to check my email. I have three email accounts that I have to check on a daily basis. I have one for family and friends, one for work/job offers, and one for school. They constantly keep me up to date with everything that I have going on. Not only that, but it also keeps me in touch with my family. It's easier to email different ones sometimes, rather than talk to them on the phone or send them a letter by mail.
I also use my computer for school. I am taking online courses to get a degree in business administration and management. I can't attend classes on campus due to having my children, and I don't live that close to a university that has anything of interest to me. So by going on my computer, I was able to enroll in classes, apply for grants, and communicate with anyone that I need to in order to do all of this.
Another thing that I use it for is to type documents and do data entry. A lot of stuff that I do requires me to use Microsoft Word on a daily basis. Every now and then I also use Excel and Access. I use these to do class work, homework, articles, reports, and much more. Also, with school I use the online library and dictionary to get work done.
Sometimes I go on to do job searches or browse through classifieds. It's a good way to find a job that's right for you without having to go to each job site. By browsing the internet, you can find out whether a company that you are interested in is hiring, what positions are open, and any additional information that you may need about the job. You can also apply online, and sometimes conduct the interview by way of email, im, or phone. It's great if you have children who keep you from always being able to get stuff done from time to time. Most job places don't like it when you bring children along to fill out an application or do an interview.
One of the most important things that I use it for is to keep in touch with family and friends. I have been through a lot of rough times, and the my computer has always helped me out with that. The one time that I really needed the most help though, was when I didn't have a computer or any other means of communication for that matter. I had really regretted not having my computer during that period of time. This is my basic means of communication with practically everyone.
I have made so many friends by having use of a computer. There are so many websites that you can go to and make friends. Not only that, but you can use instant messenger to communicate back and forth as well. There are sites for parents, basic chat, resources, news, weather, and a whole lot more. I had even created my own website, which is still in progress. I'm hoping to meet a lot more people along the way.
As I said before, if it wasn't for having my computer, I would probably be lost. I definitely wouldn't be going to school, meeting new people, and wouldn't be able to write. Writing is one of my favorite past times, and typing makes it a whole lot easier to get it done. Plus, I have found some sites and useful tools to help my daughter learn words and other useful information for toddlers.
So, as you can see...my computer is the one thing that I could not live without. It is the best way to get everything done that I need to do. Computers are a wonderful invention, and I am glad that they have come to stay.
