One of the most revolutionary additions to the Latitude XT is multi-touch. Multi-touch enables a user to touch more then one point on the screen to manipulate what is on the screen. Some basic uses involve zooming in on a picture, and moving multiple windows at one time. Another revolutionary addition is that the Latitude XT no longer requires the use of a stylus. Previously, the stylus on a Tablet PC was required to control the mouse, or select anything on the screen.
Although a stylus is still included and designed for the Latitude XT, using your finger is now completely acceptable. "We are listening and aim to exceed customers' expectations" said Dell Project Group director, Margaret Franco in the initial press release. The Latitude XT also has a new "outdoor lighting" mode, which is designed for use outdoors in sunlight. The Latitude XT has the brightest screen available on a Tablet PC, making it great for people who work indoors as well as outdoors.
In addition to adding new features, Dell also improved on some of the most basic features of Tablet PCs. The Latitude XT is the lightest Tablet PC, weighing in at under 4 pounds. The Latitude XT is also the first, and only Tablet PC to have Core 2 Solo and Core 2 Duo processor capabilities. Not only does the Latitude XT revolutionize the way you can touch the screen, it also increases the accuracy of touch. The Latitude XT is rated up to 10 times as accurate as leading competitors when it comes to stylus input. The Latitude XP is available with up to a 120GB hard drive, which is one of the largest hard drives available in any Tablet PC.
All these great features paired with Windows Vista is sure to revolutionize the Tablet PC industry. Dell has not officially announced a release date for the Latitude XT, but they have said it will be available by the end of the year. According to Dell, pricing starts at $2,499 and increases with each upgrade. The price may seem a little high for a Tablet PC, but when you look at how revolutionary the Latitude XT is, the price doesn't seem so drastically high. Full pricing, including upgrades is not available from Dell at this time, but will be released as soon as the Latitude XT is available.
