Delmarva Peninsula: A Sensational Winter Weekend Getaway and Holiday Travel Destination

For a Great Winter Day Trip, Weekend Getaway or December Holiday Destination Near Washington DC

M.G. Hardiman
Who heads east for a winter weekend getaway or the holidays? Lots of Washingtonians do. That's because we have a not-so-secret winter escape getaway travel destination that's a hop, skip and a jump from the Nation's Capital. What's it called? Delmarva.

That's right, the beautiful Delmarva Peninsula covers quite a bit of territory, about 180 miles long by 60 miles wide, and is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay (to the west) and Delaware River, Delaware Bay, and Atlantic Ocean (to the east.) It's proximity to Washington, DC, suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia make it an easy travel destination even in the heart of winter. Delmarva also offers a rural mystique that can't be found anywhere else. The sheer diversity of landscape, attractions and more make the Delmarva Peninsula a mecca for tourists and Washington DC day trippers alike.

Dover and Salisbury: The Heart of the Delmarva Peninsula

What do you find in Delmarva? Plenty. Dover, Delaware's capital city, is the Delmarva Peninsula's largest city. From the Dover Downs race track to community theater, museums and the state house, Dover's got it all for anyone looking for a fun and fabulous place to go this winter and holiday season. Looking for more winter weekend action? Check out Salisbury, Maryland, the commercial center of Eastern Maryland. Salisbury is a great winter travel destination if you like fabulous retail shops, local restaurant options, sweeping parkland and winter zoological wonders.

Historic Delmarva Peninsula

Looking for historic consequence on your weekend getaway from Washington, DC? Look no further than Lewes, Delaware, the original site of the first European colony in Delaware. Lewes features a quaint historic downtown filled with fabulous cafes and one-of-a-kind retail shops. A few steps away is the Cape May-Lewes Ferry which can whisk you and your family away to the Jersey Shore for the day or longer. For another historic locale, check out Milton, a Victorian shipbuilding town not too far away. Milton is a wonderful weekend getaway destination for weary Washington, DC urbanites.

Delmarva's Quaint Talbot County

Looking for world class inns while you take in the lovely countryside of the Delmarva Peninsula this winter and holiday season? Look no further than Talbot County, home of Easton, St. Michaels and Oxford. Talbot County opens its doors during the winter holiday season to day trippers and residents alike looking for that quaint and cozy ambiance that only the Eastern Shore can deliver during the winter months. Talbot County offers a rural elegance and Chesapeake water views that make Washington, DC's big city living a distant memory.

Check out Delmarva Beaches This Winter

Nestled in charming and diverse Delmarva is Chincoteague, Virginia, prized for its awesome wild ponies and pristine beaches. Chincoteague is run by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to keep this natural beauty safe from harm. Chincoteague transports the visitor to another time and place, one where nature presides and sets the pace. Chincoteague's isolation, even during the winter months, will transport the Washingtonian far from the big city's glare.

Looking for family fun on your weekend getaway or winter holiday? Check out Ocean City, Maryland this winter. A sensational 4-season travel destination, Ocean City has lots of restaurants, attractions and accommodations to spare in a family-friendly setting. While you're visiting Ocean City during the winter months, Winterfest is a great place to go following Thanksgiving through New Years. Most evenings, you and your family can ride the Winterfest Express Train through the animated lighted holiday displays. Afterwards, you can buy a round of yummy hot chocolate for the kids followed by an Ocean City photo op of everyone in the family.

Want to get away from it all on your weekend getaway or winter holiday? Bethany Beach, Clarksville, Fenwick Island, Frankford, Millville, Ocean View, Roxana, Selbyville, and South Bethany are collectively known as the "quiet resorts." Even in wintertime, there's nothing like a refreshing walk on the deserted beach. The fresh ocean breeze will refresh your batteries this winter holiday season. Too quiet for you at Delaware's "quiet resorts" during the winter months? Check out lovely Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Its charming Bandstand, Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, shops, restaurants, tax free shopping, and more will delight the winter weekend getaway and holiday traveler.
