Delta Burke Checks into Psychiatric Hospital
Delta Burke, who is perhaps best known for her role as Suzanne Sugarbaker on Designing Women, has voluntarily checked herself into an undisclosed psychiatric hospital.
Burke has a history of depression
Burke talked TMZ over the phone. She said she needed help with her medications for anxiety.
"I've been here a week. I came in because I was on so many medications and they just weren't working, and I knew I needed to get my meds worked out, and that's a very long, tedious procedure," she told the TMZ in an interview posted on TMZ.com on Wednesday. "Even if you're just on one or two. I'm on five. We were thinking that maybe I hadn't been properly diagnosed. Because some of these meds, it didn't seem like they were working."
Burke is in good company. In the United States, depression is becoming increasingly common. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately one in four Americans struggle with a diagnosable disorder each year.
Burke is also reportedly seeking help for obsessive-compulsive behavior and hoarding.
Several other stars have reportedly been hospitalized in the last week.
Recently Britney Spears was admitted to an LA Hospital for psychiatric evaluation and reportedly was on a 72 hour hold. The pop star has had numerous problems stemming from a custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline over the custody of their two young sons. CNN.com reports that Spears was released Wednesday afternoon after a week long stay. A Los Angeles court granted her father temporary control of her house and other assets.
Grey's Anatomy star, Justin Chambers voluntarily checked himself into a Los Angeles hospital for a reported "sleeping disorder" earlier this week. He checked in on Monday and checked out on Wednesday. He's asked that the press "respect his privacy and that of his family" at this time.
