I knew I needed to brush up on my skills but I didn't want to go back to school. The thought of college 5 days a week with a bunch of kids was too much for me. So year after year I worked where I could to keep the bills paid.
Just when I began to think that all hope was gone I saw a commercial for Graphic Design courses at Delta College of Arts & Technology. I called and spoke with a very kind counselor who encouraged me to visit the college. She explained everything to me and she answered all my questions. Before you know it I was in school, with books and loving it.
All of my teachers were extremely nice but very firm regarding class assignments due. Some classes I didn't quite understand why I needed to learn that. Good thing I never asked that dumb question lol. All classes are designed to go with the next step.
My first class was Art. I never knew how to draw, I barely knew how to draw a stick man. I thought I would struggle with this but I didn't. I learned how to coordinate color and that class helped me when I began creating background colors. My drawing class helped me when I began to work in Illustrator. I can now draw anything I desire when I work with Illustrator.
I later learned Quark, Photo Shop and InDesign. I learned how to design brochures, posters, signs, book covers and books. I'm so glad I learned these skills because now I can do what I love. That's writing children books and creating fun things for my family and friends.
This was the best course for me to learn how to design children books. The course was short, the school population was low and this gave me the opportunity to work with my teachers one on one. I really needed that and I was given the attention I needed.
Graduation day was the biggest day of my life. I felt good about me and my decision to be an graphic designer. I no longer hated work, I now look forward to working. I work in an environment I enjoy and I make my own schedule finally.
