Delta Raises Baggage Fees on Passengers (Again)
Delta Air Lines is Increasing Rates on Its Baggage Fees to Open 2010 Travel Season
There will be a different rate of increase on the Delta baggage fees depending on whether or not you are checking in online or in person. When you purchase airline tickets from Delta online, you have the option to pay your baggage fees up-front and in that fashion can save a couple of dollars along the way. The new increase of fees will mean an $8.00 increase on online customers checking in their first bag, and a $7.00 increase on the second bag that they check in. For those customers doing it in person, the baggage fee increase will be $10.00 for the first bag as well as an additional $10.00 extra for the second bag. This could create a lot of sticker shock for passengers traveling with multiple bags.
The new Delta baggage fees will then become $23.00 for the first bag and $32.00 for the second bag to online customers, with $25.00 for the first bag and $35.00 for the second bag becoming the new fees for those customers paying in person. To check in two bags with Delta Air Lines at the counter, it will now cost each passenger $60.00 total in additional fees. This is of course something that Delta won't enforce on their first class fliers, military personnel on deployment, and some of their frequent fliers. In an area of the country where we see constant advertisements from Southwest Airlines that "bags fly free," this move by Delta is not going to be welcomed warmly by consumers.
