Democrat Leader Calls Conservatives Wanting Balanced Budget "Extremist."

Snidely Whiplash
New Democrat National Committee Chair, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, pointed the gnarled finger of accusation at Republicans and announced "Your caucus seems to be held hostage by extremists." Her reference is to conservatives demanding a balanced budget aspect to any debt ceiling increase. How far have we come from sanity and fairness for the sake of partisan control?

Forgetting the partisan stupidity of this event for a moment, how is balancing a budget "extreme?" Isn't it instead true that to knowingly spend more than one takes in on a regular and incessant basis in fact the extreme act? Isn't it extreme for one to chronically live over and above one's means? To again and again spend money one does not have is extreme. It's petulant and childish for one to not attempt to ameliorate such a situation.

How many of us at home routinely spend 40% more than we bring in month after month after month, year upon year upon year? Did basic math and the fundamentals of addition and subtraction somehow elude folks? This situation is so demonstrative of the complete insanity of American politics and the playing of both parties of this game to try and buy favor.

From the partisan political aspect of this mess we can fairly lay blame for how we got here on both parties. Anyone recall how during the 2006 midterm elections the term "spent like drunken sailors" was fairly applied to the Republican led Congress? Democrats held fast to their talking point that Bush spent way too much money and Democrats had a fair point. Yet now that they hold the White House and the Senate they have spent and continue to spend money at astounding rates at least 4 times higher than any deficit Bush ever ran. So why are Democrats now screaming we can't slash budgets? How was it a Bush deficit of $300 Billion was too, too much but repeated Obama deficits of $1.4 TRILLION are fine?

Partisanship! It's the law in DC, ya know...regardless of what one's constituents want they must tow the party line. And let's not forget Nancy Pelosi's admonition to freshman Democrats in 2007 "You can cooperate with the caucus and do well here, or you can go your own way and be a one term representative." (paraphrased) What that meant was do the caucus leadership's bidding or else. Pelosi made clear to her freshmen Democrats that do what she demands or else, over and above any duty the elected representative has to his or her constituents.

Recall 2006....Bush requested an increase in the debt ceiling. The same Democrat Congressmen and women that are now screaming it's "extremist" to not raise the debt ceiling today were some of the very same ones who voted AGAINST raising the debt ceiling for Bush.

According to Barack Obama in 2006 "The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can't pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. -- Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

As well, peruse this list of Democrats against raising the ceiling in 2006: EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM...Kerry, Schumer, Clinton, Durbin, Reid and ALL THE REST! And let us not forget that BARACK OBAMA voted AGAINST raising the debt ceiling in 2006. So why is it different now?

I believe the evidence is clear...this is a partisan issue and NOT one of any true emergency. The truth is Moody's, Standard & Poor's and other credit rating firms have made clear the US credit rating will be downgraded partially based on the raising of the debt ceiling on August 2, but also on the incessant out of control spending the US engages in. Some are even advocating that to raise the debt ceiling will only make it worse as it will demonstrate the US has no clue as to what living within our means actually is.

So, how again is it extreme to slash spending and begin showing fiscal responsibility? Oh, and none of that "the troops won't be paid and old people won't get their SSI!" That's pure BS, as by law they must be paid, and considering the US takes in about $180 Billion per month in taxes, there is more than enough money to pay SSI, the troops and service the debt. Indeed though we will be about 40% short in the funds to run all the regulatory agencies the Federal Government has eroded into, and therein lies the real problem.

I mean when Democrat's depend on all those dependent on government ... employees, lobbyists and all the other assorted hanger's on for their electoral power base, we can clearly see why Democrat's are so afraid of a balanced budget. If the government shrinks and lobbyists loose some of their sway, that would doom the Democrat Party. If many useless Federal agencies (Energy, Education, etc.) were to shutter that would severely harm Democrat electoral politics...now wonder Democrats are screaming like scalded dogs. Hypocritical scalded dogs....
