Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Votes 'Nay' Against 2010 Unemployment Extension Bill Revote

Harry Reid (D-Nev) Has Voted 'no' to a Revote of the 2010 Unemployment Extension Bill Before July 4th Holiday

Congress, under the leadership of Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, continues to drag its feet on an issue affecting 1.3 million unemployed Americans, according to FOX News. Congress refuses to pass the 2010 Unemployment Extension Bill before they go to recess for the July 4th holiday, according to the Associated Press.

Harry Reid Votes 'No'

Thanks to a vote of 'Nay' or 'no' from Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, the 2010 Unemployment Extension Bill failed to garner passage this week, denying 1.3 million Americans access to additional unemployment funds.

Reid's reasoning on voting 'no,' which helped caused the bill not to have the required 60 vote support for passage this week, was done to delay the bill revote from happening. Harry Reid didn't want the revote to occur until a replacement can be named for recently deceased senior Democrat Senator from W. VA., Robert Byrd.

Reid Delays 2010 Unemployment Benefits Extension

Citing the Republicans as the cause the unemployment extension benefits bill was not passed in the Senate, Reid attempted to draw attention away from his own vote of 'no.' "It is beyond disappointing that Republicans continue to stand almost lockstep against assistance for out-of-work Americans," Reid told the press, conveniently forgetting to mention he blocked the revote from happening before the July 4th recess.

"We will vote on the measure again once there is a replacement named for the late Sen. Byrd," Reid added. But 1.3 million Americans will face zero unemployment funds this July 4th holiday, as Reid and fellow Congressional members vacation with their loved ones on the taxpayers dime.

Waiting for a replacement for Sen. Byrd is an unnecessary delay and could be eliminated if the Democratic majority would agree to use funds already in existence in Congressional coffers, according to Republicans in the Senate.

Surplus Funds Not Used for Job Creation Last Year Available

"The only reason the unemployment extension hasn't passed is because Democrats simply refuse to pass a bill that doesn't add to the debt," Republican Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky shared with the press.

McConnell's referring to the surplus left over from the stimulus bill signed last year. Enough monies allotted for job creation remain unused to meet the $33.9 billion cost Congress would face by passing the unemployment extension bill. However, Congressional democrats refused the republicans' offer to immediately sign passage of the bill if those funds could be used instead of borrowing additional money from foreign entities.

Democrats Say 'No' to Using Available Funds for Extension Bill

The democrats said 'no' to tapping into the unused job creation funding, but did not explain why those funds were never used last year and still remain available for use, as well as why the unemployment rate continues to climb in spite of the stimulus monies borrowed for job creation.

Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, however, still insists that the unemployment extension bill will have to wait for passage until West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, a fellow Democrat, can choose the late Sen. Byrd's replacement.

According to Harry Reid, more debt must be taken on in order to pass the unemployment extension bill in spite of the surplus funds that remain unused from last year, and Sen. Byrd's replacement will help the Democrats in Congress make it happen that way. Meanwhile, unemployed Americans, who will repay that debt stimulus money someday, are told those funds can't be touched to help them this July 4th by Harry Reid.

The question being asked of the republicans and democrats is to make sure the money is there in the budget and the budget does not have to continue to have a deficit. IT HAS BEEN PAID BY WORKERS!! Where did you spend the money that WORKERS have been paying for 25+ years into the system? This system is being paid into every time an employee receives a paycheck. This fund replinishes itself. Some people that pay into this system has never and will never USE the money that was paid from a paycheck. So where did the money go???? You say it is UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE but it seems the money paid by the many workers are being used for everything but unemployment insurance. The word insurance is "a practice by which an individual secures financial compensation for a specified loss". Workers have lossed jobs and paying into the unemployment insurance is a part of the way of the individual security for financial compensation for the loss of EMPLOYMENT!!! Our payments to the system has nothing

Things would be better if we didn't pay politians so much. They would be able to relate to the common man better.
Taxpayers need to put an end to all this wasteful drama or we will all go down soon.

Judy, don't forget your outrage in November, even if they pass that bill this week. Otherwise, the future unemployed will likely experience this again someday by this Congressional crowd and president.

I would like to know if Harry Reid know what it is like to watch the mail box hoping to get a check to go pay the utilites, so that you can cook food to feed your kids, or if he know what it is like to be getting a salary and then being unemployed for over a year and sending out hundreds of resume without getting a job. We put these people in office to look out for us and they get there and are acting like kids trying to show who have more power. Look Congress Senate and even the President who I voted for we need jobs, and for the time being extend the darn unemployment so we can get the little pittance to help us. In Florida unemployment is $275 per week, I can bet those people in office wives and kids use that to just buy a pocket book they don't shop at the goodwill store or even higher end store for the poor people which would be Walmart.

Come on Washington, do something and do it fast.

Dear sir, I'm writing you because it is hard out here finding jobs and i feel you should help us out because most of us do need our unemployment. I'm already going through a hard time trying to get my child support and that is so sad because it is court ordered and it seem like the system doesn't work either way. We are people who don't go out and do crimes we are sitting here patiently waiting on you to say yes to our unemployment. That money sure would help out for bills and for me to pay for my daughter senior dues so she can graduate and go to the military like she has planned to make something out of herself like i raised her too be.

    Dear sir,
I am writing (my first letter of this kind) just to let you now that the current lack of unemployment benefits and health insurance is NOT a neat orderly row of statistics on a piece of paper.... I am a real, struggling human being, desperately trying to finish college and earn a career, not just a job. I am a single mother, forced to move myself and my teenage son into my parents home because I could not find a decent job in the pikeville area. I am currently working on my phlebotomy certification but will be unable to finish school now. I was hopeful when the healthcare assistance allowed me afford healthcare, as I have thyroid problems, a tumor on my spine, and tachycardia, all requiring recurring treatment. As of the beginning of this month I am no longer insured. I simply cannot afford the $530 a month premiums on my $800 a month benefits. I still have to feed and clothe my son and myself, pay my car insurance and gas bill as well as pay full price for my medications now

No job out there for 60 years old-old man. Worked, paid into the system for 37+ years. Never claim any benefit from the "G".
Now unemployed, bankrupted, lost house, behind in rent, seeing nothing at the end of the tunnel.
Why Reid has to play his politics with hungry people.
WE HAVE THE MONEY-LET'S USE THAT!
Why blame on Replublicans when they don't want to burden our kids, grand kids more than what's already been.
    LET PASS THE BILL- DEMOCRATS.

  • Burt7/10/2010

Senator Reid is in a fight to keep his senate seat. He will have to vote the way his constituents demand or else he will lose his seat. That's why he had to vote no. At what point do unemployment payments become welfare payments?

  • Evonne7/8/2010

It gets on my nerves that someone can sit up in a comfortable position and dictate what happens to others. They should have to come to our homes and see our faces when they vote NO. Forget the national debt, if we dont get out of this rut there is nothing going to be left. I want to work I am not sitting on my behind getting comfortable with the 275 a week that I receive. I'm use to making twice that a week. Come on give us the extension we need to feed our families.
