Democratic National Convention Schedule, TV Highlights and Protest Coverage

DNC TV Coverage 2008

Donna Porter
The reasons for seeking the Democratic National Convention schedule are as varied as the voters. Americans will largely be turning into the Democratic National Convention TV coverage to learn more about what Senators Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and his running mate Joe Biden (D-Del.) are about and to experience this historic event. Those hoping for party unity will be most focused on Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) as will her supporters. And, in an eleventh-hour surprise, we find that ailing Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) may appear at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night.

Then there are the channel-switching drama seekers anxious for coverage of any Democratic National Convention protests and upheaval -- not least being over the last minute decision to fully seat Florida and Michigan delegates. Welcome to American politics, silly season is over (mostly) and the real political games begin.

The Democratic National Convention TV Schedule Viewing Guide

For a comprehensive Democratic National Convention schedule and online coverage, the official DNCC website is the first place to visit at: www.demconvention.com. Visitors will find the Democratic National Convention schedule along with HD convention video online.

Otherwise, visit TVGuide.com for a list of channels and times: (Monday) "5pm/ET C-SPAN; 6 pm/ET, CNN; 7 pm/ET, MSNBC; 8 pm/ET, PBS; 9:45 pm/ET, FNC; 10 pm/ET, ABC, CBS, NBC"

A couple of Democratic National Convention schedule tips for political junkies: Don't forget alternative news sources, including Associated Content, and look to Google News for breaking Convention updates as they occur . One key word to include in your hunt during the Democratic National Convention schedule is "P.U.M.A." - a group of vocal Clinton supporters that may or may not behave at the Convention.

Otherwise, the following list covers highlights of planned events. (For a full listing of speakers see "Sources")

Democratic National Convention Schedule Highlights - Monday, August 25

Objective: Obama's Background and Life / Theme: "One Nation"

The prime-time speaker is Michelle Obama, who will give a speech in hopes to make Americans proud for this potential First Lady. Barack Obama's sister and other family members and friends will also speak.

Additionally, Senator Edward Kennedy may appear or speak, according to the Boston Herald; it is a night for anyone who does not want to miss this statesman (or his pre-scheduled tribute) and his courage.

Additional speakers are not limited to House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the President of NARAL (Pro-Choice America).

Democratic National Convention Schedule Highlights - Tuesday, August 26

Objective: The Economy and Unity / Theme: "Renewing America's Promise."

Tuesdays is about two things: Senator Hillary Clinton and Obama's economic plans, perhaps in that order. All eyes will be on Clinton at the Democratic National Convention -- both to honor her accomplishments and to see her efforts towards unifying the Democratic party. Consequently, the best and the worst of the Convention may be seen this flag-hued, plasmic night.

As for economic policy, many governors will speak including high-profile personalities Governor Ed Rendell (D-Penn.) and Governor Ted Strickland (D-Ohio) -- both (former) Clinton supporters. The AFL-CIO President John Sweeney will also deliver a speech.

For viewers following womens' reproductive rights, Planned Parenthood President, Cecile Richards' is scheduled to speak.

Democratic National Convention Schedule Highlights - Wednesday, August 27

Theme: "Securing America's Future."

Wednesday is about a "stronger and safer America" and the night Barack Obama's running mate, Senator Joe Biden will reintroduce himself on a world stage. Former President Bill Clinton will speak as will Governor Bill Richardson (D-N.M.)and Senators Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) among several executive leaders. This convention night also includes a tribute to Iraq war veterans.

Democratic National Convention Schedule Highlights - Thursday, August 28

Barack Obama Acceptance Speech / Theme: "Change You Can Believe In"

According to the DNCC, the Convention will relocate to "INVESCO Field at Mile High so that more Americans can be a part of the fourth night of the Convention as Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination" for President of the United States. Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. will also address the Convention on Thursday night.

What more is there to say about this night of the Democratic National Convention schedule except, support or oppose Barack Obama, this is truly political history.

Many are Sussy, including this writer -- even some of the reporters admit they look forward to non-violent protests. If I could run PIP (picture-in-picture) within PIP, I would. :-)
