DEMOCRATS II

Let me start off with a bit of clarification on my last posting on Democrats. I said that unions are necessary, but need to be held in check. Some of my less intelligent readers took this to mean that either I am against unions, or that unions are fine as long as only lip-service is paid to their existence. Far from it. I am a union member myself. I recognize the need to have them in place. They do marvelous things not only for the workers they represent, but in and for the community at large. What we don't need is the militant stance that we had when unions were first recognized back in the '30's and '40's. The company and the union are basically working for the same thing. If the company can't make money, it doesn't need workers and thus everyone loses. Today we have a better meeting of the minds where unions are working with companies, instead of against them. However, unions demanding cradle to grave social safety nets should take another look at what they are asking. A recent example of this happened when those who worked for the CAW walked off the job, demanding pay increases and improved benefits. The union found itself in the same position that they try to put the companies in. They just didn't have the money to meet all the workers demands. By holding the unions in check, I was referring to asking reasonable demands, not pie-in-the-sky dreams. Our union represents auto workers who, through the years, walked the bricks and paid their dues for any and all benefits they enjoy today. It also represents casino workers who, after 3 years under their first contract, walked the bricks in order to magically bring them up to par with the auto workers. The union took the demands to the table, got nowhere, and now face layoffs due to a number of factors. The layoffs would have been worse if the union got all it asked for.

To get to the gist of this article, let's look at the Democratic stance on same-sex marriage and LGBT rights . The Democrats and Liberals would have you believe that, like a watered down criminal justice system, this is a good thing. I have nothing against the gay or lesbian population asserting their right to be treated like regular human beings. But like PET said, "The government has no business in the bedrooms of the nation." The reverse is also true. The nation has no business in what you want to do behind closed doors. I don't think Republicans are all against the gay community. Rather, unlike the Democrats, they see no need to pander to these people by giving them their special parades and days or weeks. Do what yo want to do, but keep it out of our faces. Even the Dems can't agree on what they want here. They are divided on the subject of same-sex marriage. Some members favor civil unions for same-sex couples, others favor legalized marriage, and others are opposed to same-sex marriage on religious grounds. At least the Reps seem to be of one voice on this issue. Do what you want to do, just don't flaunt it.

Almost all agree, however, that discrimination against persons because of their sexual orientation is wrong. DNC Chairman Dean has unofficially endorsed a move by gay Democrats to require the party to guarantee that 5 to 10 percent of the DNC's 2008 convention delegates are gay or lesbian. The first part is right. No one should be discriminated against for any reason. However, by calling for 5 to 10% of convention delegates to be gay or lesbian, doesn't Dean discriminate against those who would be tossed out, even if better qualified, because they are not gay or lesbian? This shows real leadership on the part of the Democrats. Listen to and bow to whomever will get you the votes. To hell with the rules, laws and guidance that make America great, let's get the vote to prove it's our way or the highway.

That's it for today's lesson, kiddies. Stay tuned.

Tell 'em, Mrs. Youranter! Paul has a stupid, liberal response for anything intellegent he reads. Mostly it's just canned rhetoric, served with "liberal" doses of Kool Aid!

My apologies for the last comment. My wife was writing in this space and ran out of room. As for your comment, Paul, of why I don't take a stance, I have and it's obvious to anyone who can read. My articles on Democrats and Republicans are, though not unbiased, simply an attempt to show the difference between Dems and Reps. I Googled both sites and chose Wikipedia to give me some background, then added comments to it.

Well, I don't know quite what to make of you, Paul, you have made 3 comments here and each one contradicts the other. You state you have read Youranters comments. Hey, who the hell are you trying to kid? You could not have read them, otherwise you would not have left such stupid comments. You can't possibly understand English or you would have understood every word, and not stated that the article made no sense. By the way I'm female, normal, and not gay.
I keep my sex life to myself and I don't see why I or anyone else should have the 'gays' flaunting their sex life to us. We don't flaunt ours. I am in the majority. But you libs give more credence to the minority. I am 'NORMAL' and proud of it.
As for your comments JonRBecker. I'm realistic. I'm from England and I remember Margaret Thatcher bringing down the unions. To me at the time it was a good thing as they were holding the country to ransom. When I think back, unions have their place in society. They do good for employe

Okay, I read your Republicans III article and you seem to point out union busting and such. so maybe you are more level headed than I at first thought - So why don't you take a position one way or the other?

  • paul angelo11/16/2006

And by the way, Republicans pander to gay-haters. The do so in order to divide Americans and distract from the very real issues that affect all of us. And the Reps don't simply say "do what you want, just don't flaunt it". They are in fact attempting to deny gay people the right to live their lives in the same manner as everyone else.

You make absolutely no sense at all ranter. You are creating an impression that unions operate on a level playing field or have the upper hand in negotiations, and ignoring the fact that unions yield relatively little power these days, as opposed to employers who hold enormous union busting abilities and political influence. Any union worth its salt will not make outrageous demands for the very reason you yourself point out-that it would hurt them ultimately. And corporations used to be able to provide a to provide a "safety net", called pensions, up until the age of conservative supply side economics and general anti-worker policies. Why aren't you outraged at the real problems-free trade, enormous executive compensation, corporate influence in government and general corporate greed?

In my excitement I forgot to ask, what are your thoughts on employment laws, NAFTA, GATT, and tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas? Don't you think that we would all be better off without unions and those pieces of legislation were abolished along with sensible employment laws where workers automatically had the right to bargain for thier servieces?

Of course this would also require that the empolyees had access to the company books to determine if they are being realistic or not. But the fact is that CEO's do not add value to a product, not real value anyway, and they are no where near being worth the monsterous salaries and benefits they earn.

Wow, I almost cried when I read this! This is awesome! Finally, at least one other person that "gets" it!
