Democrats and the Looming Government Shutdown

Snidely Whiplash
The level of hyperbole and demagoguery about the looming government shutdown is galling. We've been here before and as history is the teacher, the answer as to what happens when the government locks the doors for a few days is clearly known.

The military gets paid. Air traffic control operates. The FBI is still on the job. SSI checks go out as usual as even the president's press secretary admitted yesterday. He did try to spin it and make it sound as dire as possible by adding that new retiree's may see a problem if they haven't already been in the system and received a check before, but other than that old folks will get their stipends.

As to who will not get paid, that would be the legendary "non-essential personnel" and for some of them any shuttering of government may indeed produce a hardship no matter how short it is. What gets me most about all this is the Democrat allegation that Republican's are pulling a stunt. Let's review.

Republican's were swept into the majority in November for a reason and as lefties told us over and over and over after His Highness was anointed, elections have consequences." Most of the new Republican House members are Tea Party types and were sent to the Congress to shrink government specifically. Lefties may not like that reality but reality it is. The Republican majority is not by any insignificant or tiny margin, so if the House expresses the will of voters methinks lefties might need to get over it.

But of course they won't, now will they? Instead with not a lick of intellectual, political or factual honesty they will say more of what I have heard thus far..."kids will starve, etc." It's tiresome, it's ignorant and it's blatantly political BS. Here's a fact or two reader's might want to keep in mind.

The Constitution requires the House to submit a budget in a timely manner. Until January of this year the House and the Senate as well were run by Democrats since January, 2007. The budget for this year should have been passed in the last Congress...ya know, the one run by Pelosi when she was still Queen Bee? But House Dems didn't pass a budget.

Now we hear a plethora of BS talking points from the left as to why it wasn't done last year as it should have been but the truth is Democrats had huge majorities in both Houses and a Democrat president so passing a budget would have been little more than rubber stamping regardless of if a single Republican went along or not. So why then did the Pelosi House and the Reid Senate not pass a budget up to Democrat Obama? Any guesses?

The reason is because the Democrats knew they and their spending were and still are exceedingly unpopular and they knew they were already facing an electoral debacle last November. They passed on the budget to not further incense voters with their insane and totally inappropriate spending wishes. This isn't rocket science.

They chose to play politics with the budget to grant themselves some cover, failing although the effort was, as well as to give them a political issue to demagogue Republican's in the coming (present) Congress they knew Republican's would be leading. Again, not rocket science.

And perhaps the most important and most obvious of all is this: If no budget is passed and any shutdown does occur it will happen because of the direct action of Democrats. Either the Democrat controlled Senate will not pass the House budget proposal or the Democrat president will veto it. Like it or not lefties the reality is if no budget is passed it will be directly because of Senate Democrat inaction or Democrat presidential vetoing. Democrats will have to be the ones to choose not to pass or sign a bill. It will be because of overt action or overt inaction by Democrats.

So, this is the fault, a "stunt" of Republican's, how again exactly? Liars! I'm about sick of this and I am rather certain most citizens are too.

What is sad is that many mindless Democrats actually buy all the "kill/starve seniors" sales pitch. Democrats are hoping the educated forget that it was their party who failed to pass a budget in October 2010 due to the fear of those November midterm elections. They could have passed a budget in November and December. Instead they kicked the can down the road and want to shut down the government in order to blame Republicans. Who is the party of NO again? No budget..No fiscal responsibility...No leg to stand on?

Democrats are busy sowing the seeds of discontent. We've had gov't shutdowns before...first they don't last more than a week or so and everyone on SSI and the military has always been payed in the past. That being said Obama and Democrats are playing hardball. Obama says he will veto any new continuing resolution EVEN if it secures military pay for the rest of the fiscal year which is what the Republicans are proposing. Dems are playing a game hoping Republicans are the ones who look bad. Keep the faith and have confidence Sandra.

Your welcome. Thanks for the well wishes. I told the hubby. It's not looking good unfortunately. Even CNN has a big cover story about a military family worrying about it. I guess as long as congress gets paid they dont' care whether they can agree to compromise or to make a deal. I know a women in Walmart, her husband receives Social Security he is worried also.

The military will be paid, shut the rest of the government down and wait until the Dems decide they also want to cut a huge chunk out of the deficit

Well Sandra, if there is any delay know it is Democrats playing a little political game for fodder to use against Republicans. Gee, and I could have sworn Dems tell us they are the nice ones who love and care for all over and above all else. I hope you and your fine husband are not adversely effected and thank your husband for me for his dedication to our nation, and thanks for reading Madam! Enjoy.

Of course the military will get paid . The problem is we may get a delay in pay which is bad enough as many soldiers live from paycheck to paycheck. As I said in my article the Defence Finance and Accounting Service is unsure and can't promise that military members will be paid on time according to the Army Times.

It is galling, not unlike Obama's best friend being arrested on Monday for soliciting a prostitute.

Whippy - fingers crossed that the shutdown doesn't occur. There was some concern about military pay coming from a soldier's wife on this site - glad to hear you say that the military would be paid. It's a tragedy what is happening in Washington these days! cheers :) (*ps maybe we could collectively take all of the salaries in DC and put it towards paying down the debt, would do you think?)
