Demolition City 2 Review

An Explosive Puzzle Game

Timothy Liu
Demolition City 2 is a flash animation puzzle game programmed by Newgrounds.com user Joey Betz (joeybetz), produced by Armor Games, and drawn by Newgrounds.com user artist BoMToons. This sequel was submitted to Newgrounds.com on October 27, 2009 and won a Daily 2nd Place on October 28, 2009.

Background

You are traveling the world and helping people demolish buildings with the help of your trusty toolkit full of explosives.

Gameplay

The goal of the game is to demolish all buildings available for demolition without doing too much damage to your surroundings. At different areas, you are given different jobs. Each building will be structured differently, and you will have to plan a strategy using your available explosives to take down each building.

When you begin, you first pick a place that is unlocked. Beating more places will unlock more places. Once you have picked a location, just click on one of the building's pictures. This will take you to your first demolition job. Your goal is to bring the height of the building (indicated by a green dotted line) down below the maximum height desired (indicated by a blue dotted line). At the bottom of the screen is a reset button, in case you want to reset, your amount of cash available for use, dynamite points, your toolbox, and the detonator. Dynamite points indicate how much dynamite you are allowed to use. Certain dynamite cost more dynamite points. Generally speaking, bigger explosives cost more points, so allocate your points wisely. The toolbox contains all of the dynamite you currently have and more dynamite that you can purchase. The detonator is used when you think you are ready to let your babies boom!

To add dynamite, just pick an explosive and add it to the building. To delete a dynamite, hover over an explosive with your mouse and click on it once.

Successful demolitions will result a cash reward. You will get a contract award (the amount promised to you in the beginning before you started the job), a height bonus award, and an explosive bonus award. You will lose cash based on damage cost of your surroundings if you managed to damage things other than the building you should be demolishing.

Cash can be used to purchase bigger and more explosive dynamite.

Extras

There is a stage editor that will allow you to make your own indestructible (or highly destructible) buildings that you can then demolish with relish.

It should be noted that explosives will detonate in the order that you place them. So if you're going for a certain effect, keep this in mind.

Review

Since each area has its own story, this makes the game less monotonous than it would have been and makes the game more interesting.

There does seem to be a bit of randomness in the explosions, which can make the gameplay rather unpredictable and somewhat frustrating for players who want an exact result. However, this may be just a more realistic simulation of actual demolitions. In any case, the explosion could have been more exciting, and the toolbox could have contained more interesting types of explosives.

Demolition City 2 scores an 8/10. Better graphics and more explosive options would make this game dynamite.
